THE PLATTERS
BAKER CITY — Casey Taylor will lead
a history walk Friday, Feb. 4, starting
at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center at
5 p.m. In observation of the Chinese
New Year, Taylor will talk about the Chi-
nese in Eastern Oregon.
“We’ll concentrate on the Chinese
populations of Eastern Oregon, Baker
and Auburn, and their contributions,”
he said.
MISSION — A mixed-media exhibition
marks the return of featured exhibits
at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute. The
fi rst exhibit since 2019, “You Are Here”
explores themes related to place and
identity. Many of the featured artists
draw from personal and collective histo-
ries and memories.
It opens on Free First Friday, with no
admission charge — Friday, Feb. 4 —
and runs through May 14. Tamástslikt,
located off Interstate 84 Exit 216, near
Wildhorse Resort & Casino, is open Tues-
day through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Masks and social distancing are required.
Regular admission, good for two con-
secutive days, is $10 for adults, $9 for
seniors, $7 for youths 6-17 and free for
ages 5 and younger.
The exhibit includes painted portraits
by Ric Gendron; lithographs that merge
historical photos with traditional quilt
patterns by Wendy Red Star; dramatic
landscapes by James Lavadour; fi ber art
pieces constructed from wool blankets
and embroidered by Marie Watt; as well
as works from C. Maxx Stevens, Marcus
Amerman, Roger Amerman, Preston
Singletary, Melanie Yazzie, Merritt John-
son and Nicholas Galanin.

MILTON-FREEWATER — BJ the DJ
will spin hits from The Platters during the
upcoming Oldies Night in Milton-Free-
water. The free event is Saturday, Feb.
5, 7-10 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist
Church, 816 S. Main St.
Bob Jones calls The Platters “the big-
gest hit group of the late 1950s.” They
had four No. 1 singles on the Billboard
magazine pop charts, including “The
Great Pretender,” “My Prayer,” “Twilight
Time” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.”
The evening will feature those tunes and
dozens more, along with commentary on
the songs, the artists and the times.

TOM PETTY TRIBUTE BAND
RETURNS TO BAKER CITY
BAKER CITY — Tom Petty Unplugged
will play at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at The
Ison House Bed & Brew, 1790 Washing-
ton Ave. The show is indoors with limited
capacity. Tickets are $10 per person for
ages 21 and older. Tickets are on sale

Friday, Feb. 4, with readings from three
Wallowa County writers: longtime Fish-

professional Kathy “Kat” Johnson and

handbag at Painted Sky Center for the Arts in

BAKER CITY — The Little Big Show
isn’t until August, but artists can pick
up their board canvas Friday, Feb. 4,
3-8 p.m. at Churchill School’s Hall Pass
Gallery, 3451 Broadway St. Although
each person can take up to eight boards,
organizers ask that artists pick up only
the boards “you can commit to fi nishing
quality pieces of art.” There is a non-
refundable fee of $5. Artwork can be
three-dimensional, but may not extend
past the sides of the board. The last day
to pick up boards is July 1, 10 a.m.-8
p.m., at Churchill. For more information,

MAKE A LEATHER HANDBAG AT
PAINTED SKY
CANYON CITY — A fi ve-session class on
making a leather handbag starts Tuesday,
Feb. 15, at Painted Sky Center for the Arts,
118 Washington St. Class is for ages 16 and
older, and skill levels from beginner to inter-
mediate. The instructor is Clair Kehrberg.
Classes meet Tuesdays, through
March 15, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Registration is
$270 members or $300 nonmembers.
