When it gets to be about
October/November, February/
March, and May/June, I start
nerding out on sports stats.
OK, I am always nerding out
on sports stats — sports is why
I got into journalism more than
a decade ago to begin with.
But as any veteran
sports fan knows, those are
the playoff seasons for high
school sports in Oregon. And
lately, with the postseason in
full swing, I have been digging
into stats more — and nerding
out more. I like looking for fun
nuggets on teams on the OSAA
website, and you can find just
about any detail to tickle your

The records are great, and
the history is a ton of fun. I’ll
even give you an example of
how nerdy it’s gotten for me: In
1975, my alma mater, Vale, won
