A
re YOU having fun?
Bucking corporate
greed, thumbing noses at the
government, quitting empty
jobs to pursue more purposeful
careers and simpler lifestyles …
Today’s news headlines? Yes
— and also topics of the 1938
classic Frank Capra movie “You
Can’t Take It with You.”
More than 80 years later, this
fi lm holds timeless lessons on
courage and purpose, plus philo-
sophical questions for us all on
who we are, what we want and
how to get it.
The story starts simply
enough with a romance of two
young people from opposite
upbringings. Tony (Jimmy Stew-
art), bred into a stoic, high-class
family, is expected to pursue a
banking career like his powerful
father Anthony P. (emphasis on
the “P”) Kirby. Alice (Jean Arthur),
Tony’s secretary, has enjoyed a
more carefree life in an eccentric
household led by her fun-loving
(emphasis on the “fun”) grand-
father Martin Vanderhof (Lionel
Barrymore).
