BUSINESS & AG LIFE B2 — THE OBSERVER & BAKER CITY HERALD THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2021 La Grande School District receives rebate from OTEC, BPA OTEC Continued from Page B1 world of immersive tech- nology. The 360-degree video engages the viewer in 3D fashion. When participants put on a headset, they can look up, down and 360 degrees around a scene while they listen to the training, allowing OTEC to communicate safety messages with greater nuance and more impact, Hathaway said. The VR video on agri- cultural safety encour- ages farmworkers to con- duct a hazard assessment prior to working so they know the placement of power lines. OTEC’s safety advice is to stay at least 50 feet between a farm imple- ment and a power line, which may require spot- ters to alert the equip- ment operator. Farmers who are irrigating are asked to locate electrical hazards prior to starting work and keeping equip- ment and metal pipes at least 50 feet away from Dick Mason/The Observer The La Grande School District recently received a rebate check of $76,445.25 from Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative and the Bonneville Power Administration for energy-saving improvements it made in heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems in 2019. An enlarged replica of the check was presented by BPA and OTEC representatives to La Grande School District representatives on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021. Shown from left are Tom Osborn, an energy effi ciency manager with the BPA; Heidi Dalton, OTEC’s chief fi nancial offi cer; Randy Shaw, vice chair of the La Grande School Board; and George Mendoza, superintendent of the La Grande School District. power lines. Hathaway noted that agricultural equip- ment is usually tall, increasing the likeli- hood that someone oper- ating it could hit an over- head power line. This is why one of the pieces of advice to agricultural workers on the video is “Look up to live.” Hathaway believes virtual reality training will be a big part of OTEC’s educational tool kit for years to come. “Virtual reality is the wave of the future. It will play an active role in our safety program,” he said. The videos for fi rst responder and agricul- ture workers are among seven OTEC has made. The fi ve others focus on tourism and economic development in North- eastern Oregon. The tourism videos were made because OTEC wants to bolster the economies of the coun- ties it provides service for. “We want to boost tourism because it can drive the economy,” Hathaway said. The fact that you are so driven may sometimes create confusion in your mind and compel you to go down a path that looks to be the right one at the time, but which turns out, before long, to be very wrong for you. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) -- Not everyone is aware of what you’ve been through lately; there are a few people you should tell before embarking on a new collaboration. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) -- Despite a minor error made during your first major efforts of the day, you should be able to prog- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2021 ress as planned -- if you admit the mistake! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) -- Anyone who tells you that you needn’t be clear at this time is selling you something you don’t want. You must be simple and accurate! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- You may still be feeling the restraints that held you back some time ago -- but this is your own doing, and you can fix the problem yourself. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) -- A message received from an unknown source today is worthy of suspicion, and you should do all you can to learn its true pedigree. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) -- The differ- ence between success and failure today lies in the short space between “yes” and “no” in which so much decision-making is done! ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- You may not fully appreciate what someone has been doing for you as of late, but there’s still time. Take a close look at what’s happening. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- You don’t have to displace someone in order to put yourself in a better position today; try work- ing with, rather than against, a rival. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- The sugges- tions you receive today may actually enable you to lighten your own load -- but take care you’re not falling into a personal trap. CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- You cannot be everywhere at once, certainly, but you can send out feelers and take in information from a variety of sources throughout the day. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- A surprise may give you quite a shock today -- one far more significant than was intended. Let the perpe- trator off the hook when you get a chance. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- It’s not up to you to point out a potential offense if it’s not something that offends you directly. You must let others speak for themselves.
