COFFEE BREAK B6 — THE OBSERVER & BAKER CITY HERALD THuRSDAY, SEpTEmBER 2, 2021 Boyfriend sets ‘do not disturb’ policy for visit to ex girls and his old girlfriend. I’m grudgingly OK with that. The part I’m having real trouble with is that he told me he won’t call or text me the entire week that he is gone. He has apologized in advance but says he wants to concentrate on the girls and have a break from everything. We usually talk every day, and this seems extreme, especially since he will be spending a week with the woman who broke up with him and left him heartbroken (his words). He realizes his behavior isn’t normal and assures me we are OK, but I’m so hurt. Am I right to be this upset, and how Dear Abby: I’ve been dating a great guy for a year and a half. For eight years before we met, he dated a woman with teenage daughters. He never had chil- dren, so they are as close to his own kids as he will ever have. He was recently invited to the graduation party of one of the daughters. It will be a week- long trip, since they have moved across the country. He intends to stay awhile and visit with the Make plans with friends during the evenings so you won’t be sit- ting alone at home, stewing. And when he returns, do not give him the third degree. Dear Abby: I am a 41-year-old mother of three, married less than two years. I now realize what a selfish lover my husband is. He expects things from me and refuses to reciprocate, which leaves me unhappy and unsatisfied. When I ask him to change things up or return the same foreplay, it results in us not connecting at all. How do I get him to be less selfish without hurting his feelings? I’m on the verge of do I get past this? — Silent Treatment in Illinois Dear Silent Treatment: I understand why you would find it upsetting that your boyfriend of a year and a half has unilat- erally decided to go radio silent under these circumstances. It is a radical change of his behavior pattern, and I’m sure most women would be at least taken aback. Before he leaves, request that he send you a text con- firming he has arrived safely, and another telling you when he has started back and expects to be home. The way to “get past this” is to stay very busy in his absence. cheating. — It’s Stale in the Midwest Dear It’s Stale: Cheating won’t help your situation. It will likely make it worse. Instead of dealing with a selfish or sexu- ally repressed husband, you will have, in addition, one who is outraged when he discovers your infidelity. Find a time when you are both calm to talk to him. Tell him you love him, but your sex life is unsatisfactory, and if he loves you, he will agree to talk things out with a licensed mar- riage and family therapist. If he refuses or things don’t improve, you may want to consult a lawyer. NEWS OF THE WEIRD Cougar that was kept as illegal pet removed from NYC apartment 2019 at the Noah’s Lost Ark Exotic Animal Rescue Center in Ohio. Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said the cou- gar’s case “is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time.” The Associated Press NEW YORK — An 80-pound cougar was removed from a New York City apartment where she was being kept illegally as a pet, animal welfare offi- cials said Monday. The owner of the 11-month-old female cougar surrendered the animal on Thursday, Aug. 26, Kelly Donithan, director of animal disaster response for the Humane Society of the United States, said in a news release. The cougar, nick- named Sasha, spent the weekend at the Bronx Zoo receiving veterinary care and is now headed to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, offi- cials said. The Humane Society coordinated with zoo offi- cials, the state Department of Environmental Conser- vation and the New York Police Department on the big cat’s removal. “I’ve never seen a cougar in the wild, but I’ve seen them on leashes, smashed into cages, and crying for their mothers when breeders rip them away,” the Humane Soci- ety’s Donithan said. “I’ve also seen the heartbreak of owners, like in this case, after being sold not just a wild animal, but a false dream that they could make a good ‘pet.’” Donithan said this cougar was relatively lucky because her owners, who live in the Bronx, recog- nized that a wild cat is not fit to live in an apartment Spotted: Cow at a McDonald’s drive- through in Wisconsin MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Spotted in a car at a McDonald’s drive-through in Wisconsin: A cow — all of it. Jessica Nelson of Mosinee pulled into the drive-through at a McDon- ald’s in Marshfield on Thursday, Aug. 26, and said she looked up to see a cow in the backseat of a Buick sedan three cars ahead of her. “I thought it was fake at first. Who puts a cow in a Buick?” she told The Associated Press on Friday. “Then its whole head moved.” The Bronx Zoo via Ap This photo provided by New York’s Bronx Zoo shows an 11-month-old, 80-pound cougar that was re- moved from an apartment, in the Bronx borough of New York, where she was being kept illegally as a pet, animal welfare officials said Monday, Aug. 30, 2021. The cougar, nicknamed Sasha, spent the weekend at the Bronx Zoo receiving veterinary care and is now headed to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, officials said. and surrendered her. “The owner’s tears and nervous chirps from the cougar as we drove her away painfully drives home the many victims of this horrendous trade and myth that wild animals belong anywhere but the wild,” Donithan said. Department of Environ- mental Conservation Com- missioner Basil Seggos said that while cougars “may look cute and cuddly when young, these animals can grow up to be unpre- dictable and dangerous.” Bronx Zoo director Jim Breheny said the exotic pet trade makes no contribu- tion to the conservation of endangered species. “These animals often end up in very bad situa- tions, kept by private indi- viduals who don’t have the resources, facilities, knowledge, or expertise to provide for the animals’ most basic needs,” Bre- heny said. “In addition to these welfare concerns for the animals, the keeping of big cats by private people poses a real safety hazard to the owner, the owner’s family and the community at large.” New York has seen other notable cases involving dangerous ani- mals in private resi- dences, including Ming, a 400-pound tiger that was removed from a Harlem apartment in 2003. She posted the video on her Facebook page with the caption “A WHOLE FREAKING COW!!! Tell me you live in Wisconsin without telling me you live in Wisconsin.” She also pasted a mes- sage on the video itself that read “That’s a whole (expletive) cow in the back of that car!” By Friday afternoon the video had gotten 112,000 views. Nelson said that the family of the cow’s owner saw the post and contacted her. They said that the cow was actually a calf. She said the owner had just purchased it and two other calves — which were in the backseat as well but were lying down out of sight — at an auction.
