sale and had a package to

“each store watched care-
fully the number of times
the fl ag was put out by its
competitors.”
There were two banks
and three smaller retail
businesses — H.H. Peare,
jeweler, W.H. Bohnenkamp,
hardware business, and A.T.
Hill, drug business.
On Aug. 1, 1929, N.K.
West & Company sold out
to the Falk Department
Store Company of Boise
and William Siegrist was to
be the new manager. How-
ever, in June of 1935, West
and his son-in-law, Herman,
purchased the men’s and
boyswear department
from Falk’s, partitioning
and remodeling this sec-
tion from Falk’s. They were
issued a building permit in
July of that year for work
to cost $50 (roughly $1,000
today) to repair a brick busi-
ness building. This newly
modernized store would be
managed by Herman’s son,
Ken Siegrist.
Falk’s Department
Store remained in busi-
ness for many decades.
Over the years it was also
known as Falk’s ID and
Keith O’Brien. After they
closed, Sarah Bohnenkamp
established her home fur-
nishings store there. After
many years of this building
serving the people of La
Grande in so many ways,
tragedy struck on April
When your computer is in despair
4, 1994, when a fi re broke
out inside the store and
destroyed the building,
leaving only a huge hole
where it once stood. A
wooden fence, erected at
the edge of the sidewalk,
remained in place for nearly
10 years until in 2005 when
the N.K. West apartments
were constructed.
The story isn’t com-
plete without a bit more of
the life of Nathaniel Kend-
rick West. He was born at
Mondovia, Wisconsin, on
Aug. 31, 1866. The family
moved to Portland when
Nathaniel was a young man.
His father, N.K. Sr., was in
the clothing business and
Nathaniel went into busi-
ness with him. In 1885 he
married Martha (Mattie)
and in 1887 his daughter,
TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 2021
Ada, was born. In 1899 the
family moved to La Grande.
The year of 1902 was a dif-
fi cult one for the family —
Mattie was quite ill. She
had gotten better by the end
of the year, but in March of
1904 Mattie died at the age
of 34, leaving N.K. with
17-year-old Ada.
In March of 1909 Ada
married Herman Siegrist
and they made their home
with her father on Fourth
Street. By 1920 Ada and
Herman had a son named
Kendrick and the whole
family was still at the
Fourth Street residence.
Then in 1922 tragedy hit
the family again when Ada
passed away. She also was
only 34 years old.
In January 1923, N.K.
married Mae Robinson,
age 44, who was 20 years
his junior. Mae, who had
never married, still lived
at home, and had been the
bookkeeper for N.K. West
clothing and dry goods store
for many years. The couple
set up housekeeping at
West’s farm in the Summer-
ville area. Mr. West’s dairy
farm and his racing horses
were known to be two of his
favorite avocations.
Nathaniel Kendrick West
died in La Grande of a heart
attack at the age of 73 on
Saturday, Nov. 12, 1939.
An interesting article
popped up in the Observer
while I was doing research,
stating that on July 30, 1929,
the temperature reached 102
degrees. Seems what was
old is new again.

YOUR BIRTHDAY by Stella Wilder
Born today, you are not always suited to the
tasks that you undertake, and you are used to
feeling like you are in over your head -- espe-
cially when the going gets tough and the crit-
ics start to cackle about all that you are doing
wrong. The truth is that you rarely do any-
thing completely wrong, but your methods are
such that you don’t reach the goals or achieve
the results that others are after -- and that’s
really the key to understanding the real you.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- An emotional
outburst can set you back days or weeks today
-- so be sure to avoid anything that might
inspire such an unfortunate reaction from
you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- Starting and
stopping will not be difficult today, but keep-
ing up the momentum when things get dull
midway through will be the trick.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) -- You cannot
afford to make any decisions, large or small,
that will leave you stranded in an ideological
corner today. Be open and accepting.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) -- You must
put in the effort today if you want your cause
to prevail. Indeed, what you do right now --
yes, this moment -- may matter most, in fact.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) -- You
are feeling things more heavily today than
expected, so you’ll want to avoid situations or
people who push too many of your buttons.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- That
which happens without your knowledge today
is likely to have a major impact on you as soon
as tomorrow. Keep your eyes open!
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) -- You must
do everything you can today to further your
cause before considering a compromise that
has been suggested by a close competitor.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) -- Just as one
close contest is decided and comes to a close
today, another heats up. Can you sustain this
level of competition? Yes, indeed!
ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- You’ll win
the praise and admiration of many today as
you sustain a pattern of accomplishment that
might once have seemed improbable.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- You have
much to offer today, but you must present
your ideas in a way that doesn’t threaten any-
one else around you. Remain low-key.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- Saying the
right thing at the wrong time may be just as
dangerous today as saying the wrong thing at
any time at all. Don’t be premature!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- Examine
your motives today and you’ll realize there is
room for some improvement. There’s a selfish-
ness to be addressed.
