Congressional candidate Greg Walden, a Hood River radio station owner, hit the campaign trail today and plans a stop Saturday in Baker City. 10 YEARS AGO from the Baker City Herald August 3, 2011 Baker City’s new Central Park has attracted plenty of visitors looking for a little outdoor fun or relaxation since it opened several weeks ago. But a handful of those people have been having fun at the expense of taxpayers. “We’ve already has several incidents of vandalism,” said Mike Kee, city manager. Vandals have scrawled on picnic tables with felt mark- ers. Bicycle riders have pedaled across the newly seeded grass, tearing up the tender vegetation and carving ruts in the soft ground. Both acts are considered third-degree criminal mischief, according to Oregon law. ONE YEAR AGO from the Baker City Herald August 3, 2020 The pandemic foiled a football game but it proved no match for the generosity of Baker County ranchers and farmers, and Shriners and other volunteers across Oregon. Organizers of the annual East-West Shrine All-Star Foot- ball Game, a Baker City summer tradition since 1973 and a major fundraiser for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, announced in early May that this year’s game, scheduled for Aug. 1, was canceled due to the coronavirus crisis. But although the showcase of the state’s best recently graduated football players from Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools didn’t happen at Baker Bulldog Memorial Stadium, the annual donation to the Shriners Hospital, which provides free medical care to children, will happen as usual. “It’s good to see that despite all the changes, people still saw the importance of what our underlying mission is, which is to support the Portland hospital and the children,” said Bryan Braun of Baker City, chairman for the Shrine Game. The game, which started in 1952 and moved to Baker City in 1973, has raised close to $3 million for the Shriners Hospital in Portland. The vast majority of the money comes from relatively small donations from individuals and businesses, Braun said. “It’s a grassroots kind of donation-driven event,” he said. Garrett Anthonie Kinyon, 24, of Salt Lake City, was ar- rested after Baker City Police deployed spike strips to fl atten the tires of the 2019 Kinyon Subaru Ascent he’s accused of stealing from the Baker City Auto Ranch. Kinyon was taken to the Baker County Jail on multiple charges. Sgt. Eric Colton of the Baker County Sheriff’s Offi ce sustained minor injuries when the patrol car he was driving crashed. Although the chase and arrest happened Sunday, police actually had their fi rst contact with Kinyon a day earlier, on Saturday, July 31, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Offi ce and Baker City Police. Sheriff’s deputies gave Kin- yon a ride to the Super 8 Motel in Baker City after his car crashed and caught fi re on Interstate 84. The incident that ended with Kinyon’s arrest started about 3:37 p.m. Sunday when the dis- patch center at the Sheriff’s Offi ce received a complaint about a driver who allegedly was driving errati- cally in a blue Subaru with license plates from the Auto Ranch. Sheriff’s deputies and other of- fi cers found the car a couple min- utes later. The driver pulled onto the freeway in Baker City, driving eastbound at speeds above 100 mph, Jesse Soliz/Contributed Photo Police arrest Garrett Kinyon on Sunday, Aug. 1. Kinyon is charged with stealing a car from a Baker City dealership and leading police on a high- speed chase. according to the press release. Due to the danger of a high-speed chase, offi cers curtailed the pursuit near Milepost 313, about nine miles east of Baker City. Meanwhile, police confi rmed that the Subaru had been stolen from the Baker City Auto Ranch. Three Sheriff’s Offi ce deputies continued eastbound on the freeway, exiting at Huntington to search for the stolen car. At about 4:18 p.m., a deputy saw the car driving east from Huntington toward Farewell Bend. A deputy driving a pickup truck saw the Subaru at a creek crossing, but the driver struck the truck’s bumper and drove away. During the ensuing chase, with speeds reaching about 65 mph, Colton’s car crashed. Kinyon then drove westbound on the freeway toward Baker City at high speeds, according to the press release. Oregon State Police troopers followed the Subaru, and offi cers from the Baker City Police set up spike strips at Exit 304, which stopped the car. Kinyon fl ed to the Super 8 Motel. Baker City Police and OSP troopers set up a perimeter around the motel, which is just east of the freeway’s Campbell Street interchange, cleared the building and eventually found Kinyon in a vacant room, where he was arrested without incident. Kinyon is charged with fi rst- degree and second-degree burglary, attemping to elude, theft of services, second-degree theft, reckless driving and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
