First Friday ART SHOWS open July 2

BAKER CITY — Friday, July
2, brings new art shows at Baker
City galleries. Here’s a look at this
month’s featured artists.
Crossroads
Join Crossroads Carnegie Art
Center for “Picturing Paradise,”
cuadros by the Peruvian Women of
Pamplona Alta.
The cuadros — embroidered and
appliqued fabric pictures — were
created by women of Compacto Hu-
mano and Manos Ancashinas, art
cooperatives located in Pamplona
Alta, a shantytown situated on the
outskirts of Lima, Peru.
The show opens on First Friday,
July 2, on display from 10 a.m. to 8
p.m. Visitors can enter a drawing
for a $25 gift certifi cate to Barley
Brown’s.
According to Crossroads, this
show is possible through the
generous tributes in memory of
Della Steele, a board member of
Crossroads for many years and a
passionate lover of the arts.
The core exhibit is made up of
three individual parts: “Hopes and
Dreams” depicts each woman’s
personal aspirations for herself, for
her family or for the world; “Inspi-
rations and Motivations” illustrates
narratives about each woman’s life
and the individuals and the com-
munities that sustain her; “¿Quién
Soy Yo? (Who Am I?)” brings to
light each woman as an individual
and at the same time shows the
interconnectedness of her life in
relationship to others.
Through the cuadros, the wom-
en’s stories are visually expressed,
highlighting memories of their past
lives and the realities of their pres-
ent experiences.
The show will be on display
through July. Crossroads Carnegie
Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave.,
Baker City, is open from 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
For more information on exhibits
at Crossroads, visit www.cross-
roads-arts.org.
