By Corey Kirk

Two Baker wrestlers were
regional champions, and
eight others also qualifi ed
to compete in the state meet
with their performances in
La Grande June 11 and 12.
“We had a good weekend,
I would say we performed
really well,” Baker coach
Brandon Young said.
With 10 state qualifi ers,
Baker had the second-most,
behind La Grande’s 16.
Baker’s two regional
champions are juniors Gauge
Bloomer, at 195 pounds, and
Jaden Martin at 285 pounds.
“They just hammered
everybody,” Young said.
Baker’s other wrestlers
who qualifi ed for state by
fi nishing in the top four at
regionals:
Second place
• Cole Hester, freshman,
126 pounds
• Jacob Mills, sophomore,
182 pounds
• Adrian Allen, junior, 195
pounds
Third place
• Joey Duncan, freshman,
106 pounds

Baker’s Joey Duncan, top, fi nished third at the regional
wrestling tournament last weekend in La Grande to
qualify to compete at the state meet June 25-26.
• River Clark, sophomore,
113 pounds
Fourth place
• Marcus Chamberlain,
freshman, 106 pounds
• Sage Darlington, fresh-
man, 120 pounds
• Gavin Stone, junior, 145
pounds
Young said he was proud
to have so many underclass-
men get a chance to gain state
tournament experience.
“Now all that they are going
to do is motivate them to do
even more and do even better,
they get to go to the state tour-
nament which is really going
to help going into next season,”
Young said.
Among the regional matches
that stood out for Young was
freshman Cole Hester taking
on La Grande’s Landon Perry
in the semifi nals. Hester won
by points in a match that went
to overtime.
“He had to work for every-
thing that he got in that match,
he had some calls that kind of
didn’t go his way, so just to stay
focused and still be able to get
it done was pretty impressive,”
Young said of Hester.
Sophomore Jacob Mills
defeated La Grande’s Jared
Isaacson, the second seed at
182 pounds, to take second
place.
“He started off actually up
5-0 in the fi rst round, then the
kid came back and it was a
battle all the way till the end, it
was pure heart all the way till
the end,” Young said of Mills,
who prevailed 10-7.
Baker wrestlers will have
nearly two weeks to prepare
for the state tournament, set
for June 25-26 at Cascade
High School in Turner, near
Salem.
Young said he thinks Baker
will have an advantage over
some other Class 4A schools,
which don’t have their regional
tournaments until this week-
end.
“I think it’s just going to be
harder for them to hold onto
their kids that long going into
summer and school being out,”
Young said. “I’m glad we did
ours early.”
Fans won’t be allowed on the
fi rst day of the state tourna-
ment, but they might be
permitted the second day.

it didn’t work out that way.”
Freshman Paul Hobson
added 12 points.
With the win, Baker ended
a two-game losing streak
and improved to 6-3 on the
season.
“To leave there with a win
after a long week was cool for
us,” Jones said.
The win over Nyssa was
Baker’s fourth game in fi ve

Baker will fi nish its
season with three games in
three days, starting today at
Ontario.
“I just hope they go out

said.

for Baker against Nyssa on Friday, June 11.

Jozie Ramos made three key free throws in the fi nal
quarter to thwart a Nyssa rally on Friday, June 11 in
the Baker gym, giving Baker a 50-46 win and avenging
a 43-41 loss at Vale on May 28.
Ramos led all scorers with 27 points, including two
free throws with a few seconds left and Baker leading
by just two points.
“We take free throws very seriously, because they do
win games, and I was confi dent going up to the line.
I know that my team believed in me that I’ll make
them,” Ramos, a sophomore post, said.
Fellow sophomore Macey Moore also made three free
throws in the fi nal quarter.
The two combined to go 16 of 21 from the line.
“Those kids that go to the free-throw line, capitalize
on it and hit their free-throws, just builds confi dence,”
Baker coach Mat Sand said.
Baker broke open a close game at halftime by out-
scoring Nyssa 14-5 in the third quarter to take a 34-23
lead. Nyssa then rallied in the fi nal quarter behind
6-foot-5 post Gracie Johnson, who scored eight of her
14 points in the quarter as Nyssa scored 23 points, dou-
bling its total for the fi rst three periods. Brooklyn Johns
had nine of her 14 points in the fi nal quarter.
Baker (6-3 on the season) returned to the BHS gym
on Saturday, June 12, and has been the case the past
few seasons, the Bulldogs fell to Burns, 39-30.
Baker lost just three games in the 2018-19 and 2019-
20 seasons — while winning 49 games and one Class
4A state title — and two of those, one in each season,
were to the Hilanders.
Baker has three games left this season — today
at 5:30 p.m. against Ontario at BHS, then at Vale on
Thursday, June 17, and at La Grande on Friday.

Rate Adjustment for
Oregon Customers

Idaho Power has requested a rate adjustment with the
Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) related to
depreciation of the company’s assets.
If approved as filed, rates in Oregon would increase $139,462 overall, and the
average residential customer using 1,150 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy per
month would see a monthly bill increase of $0.27, effective December 1, 2021.
Energy companies like Idaho Power recover the cost of their investments
in assets over their expected lives through depreciation expense. Every five
years, Idaho Power files a study with the OPUC analyzing the expected lives
of its assets. Those findings result in changes to rates through adjusted cost
recovery of these assets. The study was performed this year, and proposed
impacts to each customer class are included in the table below.
