6 Thursday, June 10, 2021 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon Lonnie Shurtleff plays live Saturday ■ He plays at the Ore. Trail Interpretive Center during the day, then at Geiser-Pollman Park at 5 p.m. By Lisa Britton Go! Magazine BAKER CITY — Lonnie Shurtleff will greet visitors to the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center this Saturday. Although the center itself is closed, the system of trails and outdoor exhibits are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Shurtleff will be set up on the outside porch at the center. His programs start at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Saturday evening, Shurtleff will move his music to Geiser- Pollman Park in Baker City for an outdoor concert at the Powder River Pavilion. He will be joined by Marilyn Shollenberger -- the duo plays by the name Barefoot & Bonafi de. Their concert begins at 5 p.m. Attendance is free. Shurtleff has played music for more than 60 years. “The fi rst time I got paid to play the guitar was in 1958,” he said. When he was in high school, Shurtleff was asked to join a band that played Thursday through Sat- urday nights in the Stirrup Room at the Geiser Grand Hotel. “There was a lot of music in those years,” he said. The last year affected his live music shows, as was the case with musicians everywhere. To keep the music going, he and Shollenberger started online con- certs every Monday night through Facebook (the page is Barefoot & Bonafi de). He said his years in radio helped him approach this type of concert where he couldn’t actually see the listeners. “Imagine you’re just talking to one person,” he said. “It makes you think of the individuals, and that’s what it’s all about -- bring a chuckle, a laugh, or a tear.” He’s looking forward to a real Lonnie Shurtleff audience. “Now we have the opportunity to get out in front of people again,” he said. “The audience is an integral part -- you’re watching their faces to see the response. There’s an emo- tional energy that comes back from the crowd.” Summer Schedule NHOTIC is planning a full slate of performances both at the center and, on Saturday evenings, at Geiser-Pollman Park in Baker City • June 18-20: Buffalo Bill Boy- cott, 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., at NHOTIC • June 19: Buffalo Bill Boycott, 5-6 p.m. Geiser-Pollman Park • July 3-4: Great Bear Folk The- Submitted image Lonnie Shurtleff and Marilyn Shollenberger will play Saturday eve- ning as “Barefoot and Bonafi de.” atre, 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., at NHOTIC • July 3: Great Bear Folk The- atre, 5-6 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park • July 9-11: Susan Matley ,10:30, 12:30, 2:30, at NHOTIC • July 10: Susan Matley, 5 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park •July 17-18: Frontier’s Day at Miner’s Jubilee, times TBD, Geiser- Pollman Park • July 23-25: Linda Russell, 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, NHOTIC • July 24: Linda Russell, 5 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park • Aug. 6-8: William Rossiter, 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, at NHOTIC • Aug. 7: William Rossiter, 5 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park • Aug. 12-15: Mike Follin (per- forming as Dr. Balthazar), 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, at NHOTIC • Aug. 14: Mike Follin (per- forming as Dr. Balthazar), 5 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park • Aug. 28: TBD, 5 p.m., Geiser- Pollman Park • Sept.4-5: Labor Day Wagon Encampment, times TBD, at NHOTIC • Sept 3-5: Karen Haas, 10:30, 12:30, 2:30, at NHOTIC • Sept 4: Karen Haas, 5 p.m., Geiser-Pollman Park • Sept 4-5: Carter Junction, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at NHOTIC Providing quality and compassion to all his patients.
