Gallery and gift shop hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Masks are required, and occupancy is limited to facilitate social distancing. Art Center East exhibits are free and open to the public. Both online and in-person classes are slowly returning. There are a few on the schedule now and more on the way. Keep an eye on www.artcentereast.org/calendar for updates. SAFETY FIRST Guidelines in place for in-person classes follow government guidelines on COVID-19 safety and cleaning proce- dures. Students are expected to assess and understand their own risk level before choosing to work in an indoor space. Everyone is required to wear a mask that covers both nose and mouth at all times and to wash their hands upon arrival. IN THE GALLERY “Missing Your Face: Masks of Location, Isolation and Transformation,” on display until July 3, features work from two Oregon artists, Matt Fagan of La Grande and Tony Fuemmeler of Portland. SPRING ART GLASS SALE In sync with Birddog Glass’ annual spring sale, all Kevin Boylan art glass featured in the ACE Gift Gallery is 15% off May 6-29. BIRTHDAY GIFT DRAWING Art Center East’s birthday was May 2 and the center is celebrating all month. A fundraising drive earlier in May included a raffl e for an original painting by Denise Stone. As of May 6, ACE was short by about $1,000 of its $10,000 goal. Everyone who becomes a member of donates to the nonprofi t this month will be entered in a second drawing for a bronze piece by Judd Koehn. MAKE & TAKE KITS ACE is now offering Make & Take Kits. These take-home art projects for adults will explore a different medium each month and will be available for purchase as a subscription or a la carte. A young artist version is in the works. Participants will build on or learn the basics of painting a landscape with pastels in this class taught by Bonnie Zahn Griffi th. Following a brief introduction in composition and design elements, Zahn will lead a “paint-along,” giving participants the systematic approach to doing a studio painting based on a photo. Registration deadline is May 16. Cost of the class is $60. On Thursday, May 27, from 5-7:30 p.m., “The Characteristics of Wa- tercolors: Painting Cloudy Skies” will be the focus of an in-person class at the Josephy Center. Instructor Crystal Newton will show how the cryptic icons on a watercolor paint tube transmit helpful information that is important for the aspiring watercolor artist to consider. Participants will paint an exercise sheet that will help them under- stand what those icons are. During that process they’ll create a refer- ence sheet that to inform choices going forward. After the reference sheets, they will explore techniques for painting the sky. Preregistration is required by May 24. Cost of the class is $45. (No experience is necessary.
