6A — BAKER CITY HERALD TUESDAY, MAY 11, 2021 SPORTS BAKER BASEBALL BAKER TENNIS Bulldogs drop pair to La Grande Tigers top Baker By Corey Kirk ■ Sarah Plummer has Baker’s lone win ckirk@bakercityherald.com La Grande continued its dominance of Baker during the pandemic-abbreviated baseball season with a double- header sweep of the Bulldogs on Saturday, May 8 in La Grande. The Tigers (9-1) have won all six of the games against Baker this season. Baker, meanwhile, is 6-6 and has not lost to a team other than La Grande. Baker had a chance to get off to a fast start in the open- ing game Saturday, loading the bases in the top of the fi rst with one out. But La Grande starter Riley Miller struck out the last two batters to end the threat. “We didn’t get the timely hitting that we needed early in the game to keep that momen- tum going,” Baker coach Tim Smith said. Miller breezed from there, allowing just fi ve hits while striking out seven in the fi ve- inning game. After Baker failed to capital- ize at the plate, the Bulldogs’ defense committed two errors in the bottom of the fi rst as La Grande scored eight runs and chased starter Andrew Zellars. “We had defensive errors behind Zellars that could have gotten us out of the inning and made it not so big,” Smith said. Silas Carter, who isn’t part of Baker’s regular rotation, went 2.2 innings in relief and allowed four runs. “Silas threw well, he threw By Corey Kirk ckirk@bakercityherald.com Alex Wittwer/EO Media Group Baker’s Cody Skidgel makes contact against La Grande on Saturday, May 8. well the night before against La Grande in the JV game, he did a great job for us,” Smith said. La Grande scored at least three runs in every inning, and the game ended 18-0 when Baker failed to score in the top of the fi fth. Baker played much better in the nightcap, taking a brief 4-3 lead in the top of the fi fth. “It was the best game we played against them so far,” Smith said. Baker’s leadoff hitter, Hayden Younger, got on base to start the game, and after advancing to second on a sacrifi ce bunt, he scored. “We executed very well,” Smith said. La Grande rallied with six runs in the bottom of the fi fth to take a 9-4 lead, and the Tigers added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth to claim the 11-4 win. Mason Van Arsdall, Zander Arriaga and Cody Skidgel — batting third, fourth and fi fth — each had two hits for Baker. Arriaga drove in a run. “Cody Skidgel fi nally start- ed to swing the bat,” Smith said. “Zander and Mason had two hits. I just think the top of our order did what they needed to do.” Van Arsdall got the start on the mound and he held La Grande to just three runs through four innings before the Tigers broke out in the fi fth. “We played good defense behind Mason,” Smith said. “Mason threw really well. We had one bad half inning, it was just a couple of defen- sive errors, and we couldn’t overcome that,” Smith said. Baker will conclude its season by playing host to the combined team of Joseph, Enterprise, Wallowa and Elgin Wednesday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Baker Sports Complex, then travel- ing to Nyssa on Saturday, May 15 for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. PDT. “It will be a good week for us, hopefully we can get back on track, and get in the win column and end this thing on a positive note,” Smith said. Avril Junior Sarah Plummer had Baker’s lone victory against La Grande in Greater Oregon League tennis action Friday, May 7 at La Grande. After losing the opening set to La Grande’s Breeana Bushman, 6-4, Plummer rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 8-6, then closed out the match, 6-4. “This match was really fun to watch,” Baker coach Amy Younger said. “The girls worked really hard for ev- ery point, every game and the matches they won. Sarah has improved so much this season.” Although Baker didn’t win any other matches, Young- er said she was proud of the Bulldogs staying competi- tive despite less-than-ideal weather that included wind and rain at times. In other girls matches, Riley Shaw made her debut in singles, losing 8-3 to Ava Palmer in a pro set. In girls doubles, Shaw teamed with Tristen Tritt in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to La Grandes Emily Wilson and Collette Larvik. In boys singles, Baker’s Anthony Christopher and Karsten Cikanek lost in straight sets. Baker’s boys doubles teams of Davis Macias and Austin Hays, and Weston Downing and Noah Lien, also lost in straight sets. Younger said there were great rallies in both matches. Baker, which was scheduled to play Vale on Monday, May 11, will play host to the district tournament on Thursday, May 14 at the Ash Grove courts starting at 9 a.m. Baker will also play host to Vale on Friday, May 15 at 5 p.m. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE Thorns win Challenge Cup By Anne M. Peterson AP Sports Writer PORTLAND — Morgan Weaver buried her pen- alty kick after Portland goalkeeper Adrianna Franch stopped Nahomi Kawasumi’s attempt and the Thorns won the Challenge Cup tournament on a penalty shoot- out after a 1-1 draw with Gotham on Saturday. The Thorns did not drop a match in the National Women’s Soccer League preseason tournament. Christine Sinclair’s bending strike in the eighth minute gave the Thorns an early lead. It was her second goal of the tournament. The Canadian forward became the NWSL’s active leader with 60 career goals. The match, broadcast nationally on CBS, had an early start at 10 a.m. local time, and some 4,000 spectators attended the game. The league’s regular season opens next week.
