Pandemic changes sister’s personality
Bunny snatched:
Record-holding giant
rabbit stolen in U.K.
LONDON — Police say
one of the world’s biggest
bunnies has been stolen
from its home in central
England.
Darius, a Continental
Giant rabbit, disappeared
from his enclosure in a
backyard in the village of
Stoulton over the weekend
of April 10, the West
Mercia Police force said.
They did not elaborate on
why they thought it was a
theft instead of an escape.
The force appealed for
any information about or
sightings of Darius, who is
gray-brown and 4 feet, 3
inches long at full stretch.
He holds the Guinness
World Records citation for
the world’s longest rabbit.
Rabbits of his type are
known to weigh about 15
to 20 pounds.
Owner Annette
Edwards, a large-rabbit
breeder and model, urged
the culprit or culprits to
return Darius to his home
100 miles northwest of
London, saying it was a
“very sad day.”
She initially off ered
a 1,000 pound ($1,370)
reward, but tweeted April
13: “Please Please I am so
upset Can you bring my
Darius back I am putting
the reward up to 2,000
pounds ($2,748).”
DEAR ABBY: My sister
and I are best friends. She
has always been caring,
empathetic and passionate
about helping others. Now,
however, COVID has
turned her into a real piece
of work.
Since the
pandemic
began, she
has become
selfi sh. She
interrupts
other people
to talk about herself and
complains nonstop about
how COVID has ruined
her life, as if the rest of us
weren’t experiencing this
too.
She shouts at me when
the Wi-Fi stops working and
refuses to do basic house-
hold tasks. At fi rst I tried to
be patient because I under-
stand it’s a reaction to an
incredibly stressful time.
However, after 10 months of
this, I’m at my wits’ end.
We live together, go to
college together and share
the same friends. How can
I tolerate her self-centered-
ness until the pandemic

the fi rst fossils of the
shark at a dig east of Albu-
querque in 2013.
This week, Hodnett and
a slew of other researchers
published their fi ndings
in a bulletin of the New
Mexico Museum of Nat-
ural History & Science
identifying the shark as a
separate species.
He named the 6.7-foot
monster Dracopristis
hoff manorum, or Hoff -
man’s Dragon Shark, in
honor of the New Mexico
family that owns the land
in the Manzano Moun-
tains where the fossils
were found. Hodnett says
the area is rife with fos-
sils and easy to access
because of a quarry and
other commercial digging
operations.
The name also harkens
to the dragon-like jaw-
line and 2.5-foot fi n spines
that inspired the discov-
ery’s initial nickname,
“Godzilla Shark.”
The formal naming
announcement followed
seven years of excavation,
preservation and study.
The 12 rows of teeth
on the shark’s lower jaw,
for example, were still
obscured by layers of
sediment after excava-
tion. Hodnett only saw
them by using an angled
light technique that illu-
minates objects below.

SANTA FE, N.M.—
The 300-million-year-old
shark’s teeth were the fi rst
sign that it might be a dis-
tinct species.
The ancient chompers
looked less like the spear-
like rows of teeth of
related species. They were
squatter and shorter, less
than an inch long, around
2 centimeters.

crushing prey rather than
piercing prey,” said dis-
coverer John-Paul Hod-
nett, who was a graduate

Hodnett is now the
paleontologist and pro-
gram coordinator for the
Maryland-National Cap-
ital Parks and Planning
Commission’s Dinosaur
Park in Laurel, Maryland.
His fellow researchers
come from the New
Mexico museum, as well
as St. Joseph’s University
in Pennsylvania, Northern
Arizona University, and
Idaho State University.
The recovered fossil
skeleton is considered the
most complete of its evo-
lutionary branch —cte-
nacanth — that split from
modern sharks and rays
around 390 million years
ago and went extinct
around 60 million years
later.
Back then, eastern New
Mexico was covered by a
seaway that extended deep
into North America. Hod-
nett and his colleagues
believe that Hoff man’s
dragon shark most likely
lived in the shallows along
the coast, stalking prey
like crustaceans, fi sh and
other sharks.
New Mexico’s high
desert plateaus have also
yielded many dinosaur
fossils, including various
species of tyrannosaurus
that roamed the land mil-
lions of years ago when it
was a tropical rain forest.

if this new version of her
never goes away?
— IRKED IN IDAHO
DEAR IRKED: I wonder
if the friends you share with
your sister are having the
same reaction as you are to
being inter-
rupted and
having their

hijacked. If
the answer is
yes, a group
intervention may jolt her
back to reality and help her
recognize how obnoxious
it is.
It goes without saying
that when you can make
other living arrangements
you fi nd a roommate more
compatible than your sister.
If you do, your relation-
ship with her may improve
because you will be
exposed to her less often.
DEAR ABBY: My hus-
band and I have two chil-
dren. We have been mar-
ried for 14 years, the last six
of which have been sexless
and loveless. We tried coun-
seling, and I have threat-
ened divorce, but nothing
has changed.
After I realized that
I couldn’t change him, I
changed myself. I started
having sexual relations
with other men. He recently
found out about my aff airs
but hasn’t said a word about
it to me. I’m to the point that
I wish he would divorce me,
but he acts like nothing is
wrong! What do you recom-
mend I do next?
— LOOKING AHEAD
DEAR LOOKING
AHEAD: It’s time to decide
what YOU want to happen.
Do you want a divorce? Is
the status quo acceptable?
If it’s the latter, do nothing
diff erent than you have been
doing. However, if it isn’t,
talk to your husband about
what you are thinking.
You need to fi gure out
why the change in your
marriage happened and if
it can be fi xed. If it’s pos-
sible to repair your mar-
riage, counseling would be
an option. However, if it’s
not, it might be time for
you to talk to a lawyer and
arrange a divorce.
