As “The Moodys” returns for a second season, do
you feel you had a solid basis for playing the title
family’s patriarch when you first started the sitcom?
I was able to get certain things from the creators about
who this guy was, but anybody that has adult children –
and I do – (knows). I have two adult children, and after
having raised them and loved them for as long as you
have within the course of a marriage, you do have a lot of
love and anger and stories and experiences to build on.
Especially in dealing with adult children.
Is your own family anything like the clearly
dysfunctional Moodys?

We make this family look like angels, so as crazy as this
family might be, yeah. Some of my regrets in life are what
I put my parents through. My mother is still alive; she’s 93,
and she remembers everything that my older brother and
I did wrong. She remembers the dates, the other people
involved, and her emotions about how she felt the day that
(the given event) happened. So, these guys have got nothing (on us) in the liberties. I’m not casting
aspersions, but my brother was older, and he should have been an example.
How has it been to film “The Moodys” during the coronavirus pandemic?

I have to say that we have been able to manage through the COVID protocols, which are difficult,
and rightfully so. Once we get into the business of where it’s safe to shoot and all of the protocols
are taken care of, it really does feel like we are shooting the way we normally do. We are using
two cameras quite often, so both actors in the scene are live (working with each other in the
moment, rather than their parts of the scene being filmed separately).

The scenes are very improvisational many times, so when we are doing the work, it’s as if we are
not dealing with COVID. If you didn’t know that this show was shot during COVID, I don’t think
you’d be able to tell from the energy of the show.
