7 Thursday, November 5, 2020 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon Quick Takes Two holiday-themed art workshops offered this month BAKER CITY — Ginger Rembold will teach two holiday- themed workshops this month at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave. The first, Recycle Christmas, is Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $16 members, $24 nonmembers, or $30 per family for members or $45 for nonmem- bers. Children younger than 12 can attend for $5 members, $7.50 nonmembers, if accompanying a paid adult. There is a $5 sup- ply fee for all participants. In this workshop participants will explore creative ways to use a variety of recycled plastics, metals, woods to create your own unique nativity or perhaps a Santa or elf. Bring some recyclables to share and a creative mind. Glue, adhesives, wire, etc. plus a wealth of recycled materials will be provided. Sew Banners and Wall Hang- ings will happen Thursday, Nov. 19, from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $16 mem- bers, $24 nonmembers. Want a fun way to use up some of those fabric scraps without sewing? Turn them into colorful wall hang- ings using iron-on adhesive. All bonding materials provided, plus plenty of fabric. Bring scrap fabric on hand to add to the mix and an old iron if available. Use the pro- vided patterns or create your own! Get a head start on holiday gift giv- ing – lots of Christmas ideas plus multiple ‘nature’ type. Take home a finished product ready to wrap. Last chance to see Sherlock Holmes in action ELGIN — This is the final week- end of the Elgin Opera House’s production of “Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Bohemia” by Arthur Conan Doyle, adapted and directed by Grant Turner. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7, and 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8. This is a limited seating, socially distant event on the Elgin Opera House Mainstage. The play is a faithful adaptation of Doyle’s words, supplemented with video, images, music and sound to trans- port the viewer back to the days of Victorian London. The play features Michael Cooper as Dr. Watson, Grant Turner as Sherlock Participants in the upcoming “No-Sew” class will learn to turn scraps into color- ful art such as this holiday wall hanging. Community ofrenda open to the public LA GRANDE — Día de los Muertos is being celebrated at Art Center East, featuring a commu- nity ofrenda set up in the main gallery. Community members may add photos, notes and other memo- rabilia to the ofrenda, which will be up until Nov. 9 at the center. “It feels especially relevant this year in the midst of a global pandemic to give the community a place to remember lost loved ones and reflect on the transitory nature of life,” stated ACE’s press release. Photos of the completed ake- home ofrenda kits that are part of the celebration will be displayed at www.artcentereast.org. Handmade Holidays is next weekend LA GRANDE — Art Center East’s annual andmade Holidays Maker’s Market will be held next weekend with modifications to pro- tect the health of the community. The market, featuring a curated selection of giftable goods made by local artists, will be open Friday, Nov. 13, 4-8 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No more than 100 shoppers will be allowed inside at a time. Organizers, vendors and shoppers are all required to wear masks (no exceptions) and sanitation and dis- tancing protocols will be in place. Admission to the makers market is free. Optional reservations for a Visit the Oregon Trail Center in November BAKER CITY — Programs and exhibits continue this fall at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpre- tive Center outside Baker City. The center is currently open Thursdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The center’s system of trails is open daily. In November, a program titled “Oregon Fever” is scheduled at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During this 20-minute presen- tation, visitors learn about the emigrant experience. “Trail Talk” happens at noon each day. Visitors are invited to sit a spell and chat with a ranger about vari- ous topics. This program is 15 to 20 minutes. Family Fun Day Crossroads Art Center / Contributed Photo Holmes, Cassandra Johnson as Irene Adler, Liberty O’Dell as the King of Bohemia, and Sam Miller as multiple characters. The staging and audiovisual components were conceived by the acting company. The actors and audience are socially distanced and seating is limited. SAFELY OUT & ABOUT IN NORTHEAST OREGON The annual Family Fun Day will happen the day after Thanksgiving — Friday, Nov. 27. The day includes special programs and activities for the whole family. Admission is free. Special exhibit “Timber Culture,” a traveling exhibition, is currently on display in the Flagstaff Gallery. This exhibit provides an inclusive look at Oregon’s multicultural logging history. Visitors will learn about the lives of loggers and their families, who were drawn together from different cultures.
