■ Nov. 6 brings First Friday
at galleries in Baker City
BAKER CITY — A variety of
artists will showcase their work in
Baker City galleries this month,
beginning with the Nov. 6 First
Friday art walk.
Safety guidelines for COVID-19
remain in effect. Social distancing
and face coverings are required
inside the galleries.
Crossroads
Nancy Coffelt and Jessica Faulk
are the featured artists at Cross-
roads Carnegie Art Center. They
will present an exhibition of paint-
ings and ceramics.
The show opens Friday from 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. at the center, 2020
Auburn Ave. After 5 p.m., use the
door on Second Street.
Visitors are asked to sign in (for
contact tracing purposes) and sign
up for a gift certifi cate drawing to
Barley Brown’s Brewpub.
This show is sponsored by Baker
City Realty.
Coffelt adapts a technique of us-
ing a grid pattern in her paintings
that breaks up the light in the neg-
ative space, which also serves as
a metaphor of “putting the pieces
back together,” she said. Her main
subject matter is animal imagery
with incorporating portraits.
Originally interested in sculp-
tural work, Faulk is drawn to
understanding ceramics in a more
technical way and she devotes a
majority of her time to carving and
decorating. Each piece is hand-
made and one of a kind, pairing
beauty and function.
For this combined show, Faulk
will feature some invasive spe-
cies of Oregon, alongside Coffelt’s
collection of vermin and pests — in
addition to other critters that have
inspired her (her “Badger Dreams”
is featured on the front cover of this
week’s GO).
The work “represents non-
native plants and animals that are
resilient enough to survive in their
non-native land. Like us humans,
redefi ning landscapes but not with-
out cost,” Faulk said.
During First Friday, Crossroads
also will open the annual Orna-
ment Expo.
In the spirit of the giving season,
a CASA Giving Tree is featured
this month at Crossroads, and
visitors are encouraged to select a
tag and give a gift for a child in the
community.
