With Baker leading 5-3 in the fi rst set, Lacy Churchfi eld served seven straight points to boost the Bulldogs’ lead to 12-3. Then, with the Bulldogs up 16-10, Lauren Benson served fi ve points to build the cushion to 21-10. In the second set Baker took the lead for good at 15-13 behind two service points from Lacy Gyllen- berg. Baker never trailed again. Averi Elms and Josie Lewis provided key hits down the stretch. Anna Carter served Baker to a 7-0 start in the fi nal set. Ontario managed to pull within 16-15, but fi ve ser- vice points by Kaylee Dalke put the game away. Baker swept the non- varsity matches, winning the JV match 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 and the JV2 match 18-25, 25-19, 15-9. The Baker varsity lost a nonleague match at Pend- leton on Monday 13-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-25. Baker won the junior varsity match at Pendleton 25-19, 16-25, 15-9. The varsity team travels to Sisters for a tournament on Saturday. It was more of the same in the second half with neither team fi nding the net. Baker (2-0-1) hosts Four Rivers in another nonleague match Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Sports Complex. The Bulldogs then open Greater Oregon League play at La Grande Saturday. Marco Gonzales allowed six hits in seven innings, Austin Nola and Omar Narvaez hit back-to-back home runs and the Seattle Mariners beat Pittsburgh 6-0 after Pirates All-Star closer Felipe Vázquez was arrested on multiple felony charges earlier in the day. The Pirates lost their fourth straight game and fell to 21-41 in the second half. Vázquez was charged with statutory sexual assault, solic- iting a child and pornography, and placed on administra- tive leave by Major League Baseball. Gonzales (16-11) struck out four, walked none and doubled and scored in the fi fth inning. The left-hander has set career high in wins, starts (32) and innings pitched (189). Gonzales has two starts remaining and is hopeful of reaching 200 innings. Narvaez and Nola each had three hits, and their consecutive home runs in the sixth inning off Michael Feliz extended the Mariners’ lead to 4-0. WEISER — Weiser shut out Baker 4-0 in a nonleague girls soccer match Monday at Weiser. Baker keeper Shayna Ruby stopped 26 of 30 shots, including two in the penalty area.
