I guarantee it.” - JR ■ U.S. men fail to win gold at major tournament for first time since 2006 Dodgers clinch playoff berth By Tim Reynolds AP Basketball Writer DONGGUAN, China — The U.S. has been ousted from medal contention by France at the World Cup, failing to capture gold at a major international tourna- ment for the fi rst time since the 2006 world champion- ships. Evan Fournier scored 22 points, Rudy Gobert added 21 points and 16 rebounds and France beat the U.S. 89-79 in the World Cup quarterfi nals on Wednesday, rallying from a seven-point fourth-quarter defi cit to pull off the upset. The U.S. had won 58 consecutive tournament games in FIBA and Olympic competition, starting with the bronze-medal game at the 2006 world champion- ships and continuing through every FIBA Americas, World Cup and Olympics event since. It was bidding to become the fi rst nation to win three consecutive World Cups, after winning three straight Olympic golds in that span. But the best the Americans can do now in China is fi nish fi fth. They’re going home with a berth in the 2020 Olympics secured, but no medal. “We came here to win gold,” Gobert said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. A lot of people counted us out, but we got the win.” Gobert said beating the Americans wasn’t the goal — winning gold is. “It doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win in the end,” Gobert said. BALTIMORE (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers sprayed each other with bubbly, emp- tied dozens of bottles of beer while drinking very little of it and essentially carried on in a fashion appropriate for a team celebrating its seventh consecutive NL West title. Certainly, the Dodgers were elated about becoming the fi rst team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season. Yet, because the oc- casion was virtually a given since May and not nearly as emotional as their playoff win over Colorado in Game 163 last year, the party was, as manager Dave Roberts put it, “subdued.” The Dodgers, with a power- packed lineup and imposing rotation, gained sole posses- sion of fi rst place on April 17 and never looked back. 225 H Street • East of I-84 • 541-523-3200 • grumpysrepair.com TREASURE VALLEY STEEL, INC. -=JQB=?PQNEJC:AA #AA0QNHEJO )J(KQOA#QOPKI#QP%T=?P,AJCPDO (KQOA#QOPKI *VSVYZ *\Z[VT;YPT ¹*VYY\NH[LK +LSP]LY`(]HPSHISL -\SS:Vɉ[[3PUL M[.\SM*VHZ[7HULS M[7)97HULS M[4LZH7HULS M[;\Ɉ9PI7HULS :[HUKPUN:LHT $%,)6%29 M[+LS[H9PI !6!),!",% M[7YV7HULS NO MORE GUTTER CLEANING, OR YOUR MONEY BACK – GUARANTEED! 0 % AND! SEATTLE (AP) — The rebuilding Seattle Mariners have spent the last year talk- ing about the future. They got to see a glimpse of it during a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night as nine rookies played and con- tributed heavily to the victory. Kyle Lewis hit a towering home run on the day he was called up to the big leagues. Justus Sheffi eld pitched his longest outing of the season. And Dylan Moore helped the team turn four double plays and hit his own homer. “When you’ve got guys that are debuting, you’ve got guys that are young, that are just getting here, there’s an excitement level there,” Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager said. “Every day will bring something new whether you’re in (the pennant race) or not.” The 31-year-old Seager hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Mariners ended a six-game losing streak.
