Seeing how much joy that portrait brought them, Eisenbraun wanted to do that for other families. Now the program runs out of Bend but is reaching across the country to other areas of Oregon, Arizona, South Carolina, Kentucky and Minnesota, with hopes of going to even more states. “We saw two different situations,” Eisenbraun said. “Families who are struggling to fi nd peace in their lives while they’re dealing with all this upheaval of medical challenges. And artists who are struggling to engage their careers and get recognition. Sometimes you put two diver- gent things together and you get something good.” To have a portrait done of a child, the parents, or someone who thinks the family would benefi t from the portrait can fi ll out a form on the Portrait Connection website. Accord- ing to the website, “Portrait Connection serves children who have a medical condition that is considered progressive, degenerative, or malignant and are within two years of their most recent treatment. The child must be between the ages of 1 and 18 years old at the time of application.” Portrait Connection receives funding through organizations and private donations. Portrait Connection assigns a child to an artist, sending photos for reference. These artists live all over the nation, so they don’t often meet the children in person, according to Eisenbraun. The portraits were pre- sented as a surprise to each family with a sheet being withdrawn to reveal the im- ages. “It is just a bright spot in our life and a happy memory of a time he was celebrated,” Karla Macy, from Baker City, mother of Gus Macy, a 3-year- old with spina bifi da, said of the painting of her son. “It just looks like his personality.” When shown his portrait, Gus said, “It’s very cute.” It’s Back to School! City seeking art for public display The Baker City Public Art Commission is taking applications for its Art on Loan program. Artists are invited to lend their work to the city for one year for display at a public location. More information is avail- able by calling Robin Nudd at 541-524-2036, and ap- plications are available at bakercity.com. First review of applications will take place Oct. 9. Agencies end some restrictions on fires, activities Widespread rain on Sunday and the coolest weather in more than two months prompted state and federal agencies to ease some restrictions on campfi res and other activities imposed earlier this summer due to high fi re danger. U.S. Forest Service • Both the Wallowa-Whitman and Umatilla Nation- al Forest have ended public use restrictions including those affecting chain saw use, smoking, campfi res and off-road vehicle travel. • The Blue Mountain and Prairie City ranger districts on the north part of the Malheur National Forest have also lifted all public use restrictions. Those restrictions remain in effect, however, on the Malheur’s Emigrant Creek Ranger District. Oregon Department of Forestry The state agency has ended public use restrictions on state and private lands it protects in Northeastern Oregon. Campfi res are now allowed, with landowner permis- sion. Although public use restrictions have been eased, fi re season is still in effect. That means burn permits are required for all open fi res (except campfi res), debris burns and burn barrels. The Northeast Oregon District includes lands in the following counties: Union, Baker, Umatilla, Wallowa and small portions of Grant, Mor- row and Malheur counties. To obtain a burn permit from ODF, call the Baker City offi ce, 541-523-5831. YOU WORK HARD ENOUGH. MAKE YOUR PLACE WORK HARDER FOR YOU.
