P.)—In nearly every part of the British em pire where cotton is grown condi tions were satisfactory last year, ac cording to the annual report of the British Cotton Growing Association. It is generally admitted, says the report that 1923 was ono of the most unprofitable ever experienced in the history of the cotton milling industry In Great Britain, due to shortage of raw materials. The great bulk of the mills using American cotton worked on short time, and the earning pow er ot the operatives was seriously curtsiled. This condition is being overcome by the Increased produc tion of the British colonies. Attar detailing the progress made In oottoa growing tn various parts of tbe empire the report concludes: "The Increased quantities of cot- ton produced during the many parts of the empire is very gratifying, especially at a time when the prospects for a greater produc tion In America appear to lie getting more remote every year. It cannot be denied that the cotton industry In (treat Britain has been passing through the worst time it has exper ienced since the cotton famine, and there can be little doubt that the cost of cotton goods, largely due to the high price of the raw material, is responsible to a great extent for the poor demand from overseas markets. The world supply of useful cotton has been seriously curtailed as a re sult of the recent failures of the American crop, and with better trade conditions the demand tor raw cot ton would certainly have exceeded the supply." June 20.— (A. P.)— Statistics made public by the Los Angeles Traffic Commission reveal that Los Angeles streets are the most congested in the United States. In making the comparisons, traffic at each intersection of the principal streets outside of the downtown area proper were recorded. Some of the salient points which the check disclosed were: Los Angeles county, with 425.572 automobiles (tourists' machines not included) represents 3 Vs per cent of the total automobile registration of the country. Approximately 310,000 curs enter the congested district every day. This is said to be mire than the total number of automobiles registered In New York City. Motor traffic at Adams and Figueroa streets is de clared the heaviest in the United States. During the eleven and a half hours of the day ot the check 69,797 cars traversed both streets of the In tersection. The total registration ot Los Angeles county is larger by 120,- 000 than that of New York. The check shows that there are three intersections in Los Angeles that have a daily movement ot over 45.000 machines; six intersections with between 40.000 and 45,000; nine intersections with betweeu 35,- 000 and 40.000, and 23 more with a movement of 30,000 to 35,000. The figures show the traffic movenieut for only one street ot each intersec tion, that is, north and south traffic or east and west traffic.
