1923, according to a report received by
the Department of Agriculture. Th*
total number of fura shipped from
Alaska during 1923 was 397487.
While this number exceeds thst of tbe
previous year by 2,040, th* value Is
$8,127 lesa because of the lower prices
paid for some kinds of furs.
As usual, the muskrat exceeded all
otliers, both In numbers and In total
value of skins. 319,611 of these having
a value of $367,552, being the year's
export. Next In order came the white
fox, numbering 7030. with a value of
$297.476; the beaver, with 14341
skins, worth $258,138, and the red fox
with 19,787 skins, valued at $215,740.
The most notable decrease as cotn-
jared with 1922 Is th* mink, 31,983 of
those skins being shipped thst year
and 20.668 In 1923. The most notable
Increase Is th* red fox. 5.979 skins be­
ing exported In 1922 and 10,787 In
1923.

An automobile tire company dis­
plays In Its salesrooms in New York
one of the most perfect machines yet
devised for demonstrating the working
of a tire under mad conditions. Mount­
ed on a heavy stand, a big Iron drum Is
driven by an electric motor. An axle
and wheel ar* mounted over the drum,
with the tire In contact with it and
bearing Its weight. The tire is under
the same pressure as If on a loaded
touring car. The test, a most severe
one. consists In driving nails, spikes,
etc.. Into the tire and tube and then
running with them In at a rate of about
twenty-flve miles an hour. The ma­
chine la operated by electric power and
Is also equipped with a speedometer,
which gives a correct speed of wheels,

Notched Rotor Is Used
in Battery Ignition
In battery Ignition systems there Is
usually employed a notched rotor
against which presses the latch or trip­
per, with short springs attached. When
this latch becomes worn the entire sys­
tem will fall to operate properly, and
It la a wise precaution to carry a spare
latch la the tool box. It Is not difficult
to iemove and replace this latch, which
fits In but one way, so that there Is no
danger of placing It wrong.

One frequently hears the suggestion
that a change of tire size makes a very
serious difference In the accuracy of
the speedometer, Httd more particularly
of that shown by the odometer. As a
matter of fact, there Is a difference,
but It amounts to very little when short
distances are considered. For Instance,
a difference of half on Inch In diameter
In a 34-lncb tire makes a difference In
odometer reading of 80 feet to the
mile. When a permanent change of
tire size Is made it Is Important to
have the recording Instrument adjusted
to meet it.
