Mr. Jno. McAllister,
Herkimer, N. Y.
Dear Uncle: Well—we arrived safely after such a long, long
journey, I had no idea this United States was such a big country. In
passing thru Wisconsin, Minnesota and Dakota it snowed so hard that
we could see but little of the surrounding country, but it seems like there
is room for everyone to have a home there. After we left Minneapolis
we saw no more cities until we arrived in Salt Lake, we could not resist
staying over for a day there and taking a car to 3ee the country.
Salt Lake is a wonderful city, and most wonderful to me was the fact
that immense steel and iron mills are building to supply all this
glorious west with its metal needs. When you come, plan to stay in Salt
Lake at least two days, one is not enough. Our next city was Portland,
Oregon—same name as our old Portland, but quite a different city, this
one is a sea port far from the sea. Portland has some nice stores, quite
up to date, good stocks and well managed, the city has such narrow
streets in the shopping sections that it is congested at times. We spent
a most delightful day there, taking a car for the day that we might see
for ourselves. We drove first to Council Crest, this is a hill right in
town, and from it you have the most beautiful view, some great
mountain peaks covered with snow are visible, tho they are a long way
off. We next drove out on the Columbia Highway, we went out about
GO miles and it’3 a fine trip, reminds me of the trip along the Hudson,
tho there is nothing just like the Palisades, the country is not of such
broken contour, more rolling, and all along the way you follow the
Columbia River, Jim is coming, so must stop,
