There are more than 26 million i
horses and mules in the United '
States. Seventeen .million . of these
are actually in hameoe each year,
doing work on farms, plantations
and ranches, and over two million
are annually engaged in cities and
otiher non-agricultural work. We
exported more than one and a half j
million horses and mules to Europe
within the last decade, yet had more
left in the United States, January 1,
1920, than ever before; but there
has been a decrease ot about a mil
lion head since that time because !
of the lessened breeding ct small Í
horses.
More than 97 per cent of all field
work on farms is still done by horsee
and mules. No tractors yfrt devised
have been able to approach the horse
in adaptability, reliability and econ
omy of work on farms. There la no
reason to belters that the horse will
be extinct witlrfn 100 years, nor In
