The English Christmas la net undkt

pretty custom o< “bringing in the

the burning log on Christmas Ere to
sing carols and tell Christmas legends.
Often the children who live In the

the huge log. An English child would

chamber ot commerce, and as a rep
resentative of this same chamber
of commerce, and stated their plans
and asked the county to contribute
to the expense of the trip. He was
asked to what extent the county
should contribute, and replied that
150.00 would be satisfactory; and
the country court pledged that
amount. Immediately upon the re
turn from the trip to Wlllitts this
same “some one else” came and
made an oral report of the good re-
su’ts of tbe expedition and stated
that the expense had not been as
much as anticipated, and. if the
county would advance the funds at
once that 140.00 would satisfy the
pledge. This was his own proposi
tion and not that of the county court.
The $40.00 was paid at once and the
matter considered closed, and you
can well imagine the surprise of the
members of the county court a few
weeks later when the president ot
tbe Chamber of Commerce appeared
and asked orally for $135.00 as a
contribution of the county toward
paying a part of the expense of this
same trip. Later this bill was re
duced to writing and asked
for
$130.00 less $40.00. and was reject
ed by the county court as having
been paid in full.
Now as to the failure of the coun
ty court to grant $1,500.00 annually
for "advertising purposes,” but in
reality to be used for the construc
tion of an exhibit building and home
for the Grants Pass Chamber of Com
merce, their news letter reads in
part as follows: "Did we get the al
lowance from the County Court with
a unanimous farmer and business
man sentiment? We did not." This
unanimous sentiment is questioned
seriously by the county court, as he
fore taking final action on the re
quest the county court listened to
many volunteer expressions as to
whether the amount should be grant
ed, and asked many more for an ex
pression and usually got it. About
half of the Grants Pass people who
expressed themselves were In favor of
it and the other half opposed to
granting the amount, though quite a
number of the latter volunteered to
state that they would not dare to
openly oppose it as their business
would suffer if their position were
known. The country people were
nearly unanimous against it, and we
believe that we carried out the wish
of thé majority of the taxpayers in
the county when we declined to re
commend the addition of this item
I
to the budget.
The "News Letter” also states:
"We notice that the tax commission
has saved the farmers and business
nten four mills by a proper reduc
tion of the budget.” This may be
partly true, though it is a debatable
question whether cutting off the two I
mills bridge levy carried on the bud
get at $16,300.000. any part of which
that is not absolutely required to
build or maintain bridges Is used
