FOREST FIRES ARE NUMEROUS Settlers Held Responsible for Many Blaze» Nou That No Permit Needed Danger from forest fires is far from being passed, and in fact, pre sents a greater hazzard now than at any ttm« thl« season, according to C. A. Hoxie, district fire warden, who dropped into the local office for a short visit. “The great menace at present,” said Mr. Hoxie, “is from the many settlers who are burning slashings, and who allow the fire to get out of the first of the month and now no control. The closed season expired permits are required, despite the fact that the woods are the driest they have been in months. Saturday a 200-acre fire was burn ing at Kelsey, while a 120-acre fire on the lower Rogue river is now reported under control. A number of bad fires have occurred in the past few days. The local office has replaced a great many of the men laid off a short time ago, while the state has eight wardens and lookouts still on the payroll. HOOD RIVER APPLES ECLIPSED Fruit From Eismann Orchards, at Rogur River, Said to Be Finest The erstwhile famous Hood River apple is being forced to a position in the back row by the fruit from the Rogue River district, according to a message from the Associated Fruit company of Chicago to the Eismann Orchards of 'Rogue River. The tele gram stated the local product to bo the most beautiful apples ever hand led by the asaociation, and the best received from the whole northwest at the time of sale. The Eismann Orchards beat the Hood River product 40c per box over and above their quotations, while a premium of 25c was received over northwest Jonathans. Thirty carloads of apples will be shipped from the orchard this sea son, and the product is said to be the finest sent out by the local grow er in the 20 years he has been en gaged in the fruit industry.
