But sometimes a soil is con demned as unfertile without a fair and reasonable teeL Under Ute ca nals of the Grants Pass irrigation project there is a proportion of soil that classes as "granite," having been formed through the decomposi tion of a granite bed rock. With out water the granite soil did not give profitable returns when farmed, and there were many ready to con-' damn Some crops, even with irri gation. gave a puny and unhealthy growth, and then the pessimist sang Mia “I told you eo” song and said the district was headed for the dem- nitlen bow wows. But tests are proving how little these pessimists knew about the subject. There is a tract of the granite soil lying just out of ths city on the Pa cific highway that is typical. It was as devoid at humus as the natural granite could be, and a pear ago was still in brush. Sunday afternoon the state engineer and th« state super intendent of banks in their official capacity as the members of the Ore gon irrigation securities commission, stood upon this tract and each voiced the statement that never bad he seen a better stand of clover on any land any where in the world. The clover was waist high, Just coming into bloom, and there was not room for another stalk of the legume, And this on granite soil less than a year from the brush. The only thing wrong with the granite »oil seems to be the lack ot humus. Clover will supply this need, and once supplied, the granite 'becomes remarkably productive when irrigation is supplied. The pes simist and the doubler should see this clover crop now growing upon the tract being developed by Messrs. Walker and Proctor. The crop will. be made into hay before the end ot the present week, so go over and take a look at it tomorrow. It will give you a taste of what the Grants Pass Irrigation district can look like a few months hence if the people make proper use of the water that will be there for them. Forest fires are becoming common. Every fire means a loss to the people at the United States.
