Sooner or later your electrical system will fall to charge the battery. When that happens your engine will begin to ml»» explosions and shortly after will refuse to run. Before thia calamity overtake* you there will be plenty of warning. The lights will go down more than u*ual when the starter I* used. They will brighten when you speed up the engine and grow dltn when you »low down. These signs polut to a weak battery and should not be disregarded. If you have been observant you will have noticed that the ammeter registered a low charging rate. This Indicates that the generator la not charging a* It should. But the fault tuay be In the driver and not hi the generator at all If the starter or the lights are used too much the current will be drawn from the battery faster than It ts being charged So note that your batter» gets the proper balance. If the cw Is run much at night the battery may not receive enough current. Run th« engine more during the daytime, so as to replace the current that ha* been drawn from It. When Charging System Fails. If the chanting system has failed due to some defect, have It attended to at a service station, and have the battery charged Immediately. Some owners prefer to charge their own batteries from the lighting system In the house. This 1« a practical method and one that will grow, especially where servlet stations are not avail- able. Special api«arntus Is required, hut If Is not expensive. It may be con- nected to any lamp socket using 11O- volt current. This may be direct or alternating. tt>e apparatus differing according to which current Is used. F<>r direct current a rheostat Is etu ployed which brings the current down to the right amperes, usually ten amper«m for the average battery used on a starting and lighting system. For »Iterating current a rectlfler must be used to give direct current and to give the right amperage. The positive of the battery must be con- nected to the positive lead from the apparatus anil the negative of battery to the negative lead. This runs the charging current Into the positive of the battery, reversing the chemical composition of the plates. Then, when the change Is complete, charging Is stopped and the current may be drawn from the positive In the usual manner. Prepare for Charging. Refore charging you must see that the electrolyte covers the plates. Noth ing but distilled watej should ever be added for this purpose, and then only after the battery Is charged The elec trolyte should cover the plates at least a quarter of an Inch at all times. Hav ing Inspected and corrected this condi tion, the filling caps should l>e re moved to allow the gas to earn pc Then adjust the amperage according to the capacity of the battery. A discharged battery should start charg Ing at one-tenth capacity. Thus a 100 amperehour battery should start at ten amperes; a sixty ampere-hour at six amperes. In an hour or so the hydrogen gas will atari tq come off very freely. This Is known as gassing or boiling. When It gnsea freely yon diminish the charging rate one or two amperes. The battery will be fullly charged when the electrolyte reads 1.275 to 1,300 on She hydrometer. This will take ahont ten hours. The volt meter reading will be about seven volt», but the hydrometer test Is more satisfactory. . ; ; . STORAGE BATTERY --------------------- t---------------a--------------------------------- Josephine County Farm Bureau Members to Pool implement requirements. H. LITKE The Local Moline Plow Co. Man the local Moline Plow Dealer met with the executive committee of the Josephine County Farm Bureau last week and made an agreement with them to supply the members of their organization with Mo line implements at a very large saving. The Moline line of farm implements has been on the market for over 50 years and it is known the world over for its high quality. This line is very complete, consisting of all kinds of plows, harrows, cultivators, binders, grain drills, mowers, rakes, wagons, trucks, manure spreaders, farm scales, farm tractors, orchard tractors, tractor implements, motor trucks, motor truck bodies. This is just another indication as to what can be done by cooperative buying and if you are not a member of the local Farm Bureau you should look into this at once and become a member as it is pos sible for you to save enough on your implements this fall to pay your dues for several years. Members should get in touch with Mr. Hawes, Secretary, or Mr. Miller, County Agent, at once and get full information in regards to this new arrange ment, which eliminates the old extravagant method of marketing implements. <
