But the rent does uot quit. And your taxes do not quit. And your insurance dot's not quit. Moreover the peonle do not go to bed at 6. . Why not let an electric sign and brightly lighted windows, illuminated with electricity, go on sell ing goods for you after 6t All through the evening in fact. Why not— The very people you want to reach—the purchasers —hâve no time to lx* on the street except even ings. That is the time they roam about, looking, seeing, formulating and deciding on their purchases. People do not have to hunt up your electric sign. It hunts them up like a search light. It is seen from afar. It talks to folks all along the street. They do not have to decipher it. either. It burns its message into them quickly, pleasantly, deeply and surely. MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS Eaeentlal That Ends and Corn«is 8« Erected Firm and Solid—Fosta Should Bo Largo Enough t* Give Needed Strength. (Prepared by the United States ttepart- ment of Agriculture ) Of all the changes wrought 111 th* fanning Industry during the last cen tury none is tuore noticeable than that in fencing, say specialists of the Uni ted State« Department of Agriculture. All over the Eastern United States there are hundreds of tulles of atone wall fences which are monumeiita to the patience and thoroughness of earlier generations. Overlapping this territory, and extending west, are fouud fences of spilt rails, with their famlllsr weeds and berry bushes In the angles, while still farther west, where there was neither wood nor stone, are seen usage orange and other hedges. These are natural pro ductions of the time. The fsnner usually finds today that barbed-wire or woven-wlre fence will best serve his ends for uew construc tion. and at the same time cost least. Barbed wire is used ou large stock rauges where the loss of one or two animals through wire cutting is not serious, but for the fanner with fine horse«, or a selected herd of cattle, large mesh woven-wlre fences art coming more Into use. Ends and Corners. The manner In which the fence Is erected ha» much to do with Its serv ice. The ends and corners are by far the most Important elements of u fence. It Is essential that they remain firm and solid In order to hold the fence rigid. The first thing to consider Is placing thé corners. The posts used should be large enough to give suffi cient strength ; they should be set deep enough to prevent heaving by the ac HAVE YOU REGISTERED? tion of frost ; they should be braced from each direction of tension by a stout rail about 12 feet long. The distance between iwists depends on the lo<’iitlon of the fence ami the numbers and kinds of stock to be turned. the average In field fences being about 20 feet. 'Do construct a woven-wlre fence properly It Is necesanry to have a single woven-wlre stretcher, a wire stretcher to be used In at- tachlng the fence to the end (rosta, a pair of wire cutters, a barbed-wtre stretcher, a splicing tool, and hammers for stapling and fastening the wire. Barbed and woven wire may he un rolled by attaching the reel to the back of a wagon or by running a bar through the core and drawing It along with a horse. Stretching the Wire, After the wire la unrolled It Should be drawn up to the line of posts ami freed from adhering trash. The stretchers are then attached and the line wires drawn until they are so taut »hut they cun Just be pressed together. Some slack may be allowed for uneven ground. In fastening the wire on the posts the line wire should be kept as nearly horizontal as possible ami al lowed to follow small Irregularities In the ground. The staples should per mit horizontal movement of the wire, allowing the weight of the fence to come directly on the corner posts, thus taking care of contraction .nd expan sion due to weather conditions. A woven-wlre fence Is not complete with out a strand of barbed wire above It; this prevents the stock from reaching over anil crowding It down.
