My mother detested slsng, says a writer lu Scribner's The use of slang expreHSluiia was to tier soiuetblug very ckuwly akin to making up a bed with out properly airlug It or going to a party without a clean handkerchief. When my sitter or 1 used some of ths slang of our day, she used to say plaintively that she cosldn't think where we got hold of such expressions. Had anyone said to rue then that my mother used elsng I should have been Incredulous and very likely Indlgnaut. While I considered my own right to a latitude of language Inalienable to my youth. I felt. If only subconsciously, that mothers (and especially mine, who was of tire good old-fashlooed va- rlety of genuine mothers) were dif- fervnt. One would no more expect them to use slang than one would ex pect them to wear short skirts, or dance, or ride a bicycle, or want the largest helping of Ice cream. I am sure If I bad heard my mother say “rubberneck" or “for the love of Mike," tbe souud of such words on her lips would have horrified me even more than they, horrified her when she heard them on mine. It waKouly recently that tbe great revelation came to me. Harking back to my childhood. I hsd used one of my mother's favorite words, "rambunc tious," and was promptly asked what It meant by a person who bad not had the advantage of being brought up In New England. Surprised at her Ignorance. I explained at once that It was my mother's word for—well, for wbat? I hud to put my reluctant brain to work before I could find words that gave even a faint flavor of what mother meant when she said: “Now, yon children, you’re getting altogether too rambnnctlons." Not satisfied with my own definition. I finally sought Mr. Webster’s aid. Rambunctious was not In the 'abridged* on my desk. When I bad turned, grumbling at tbe words they sriect to leave out of tbe abridged to tbe unwfeldy colossus in tbe ball, I could scarcely believe my knowl edge of the sequence of the alphabet. But a careful resurvey felled to find me tripping. Rambunctious was not there. The dictionary passed blithely on from rambler to rameel (the same as ramal. If yon must know). As I laid the dictionary down a new light horpt upon me. Rambunctious was not a word In good standing. What was 8t. then, but tbe slang of an older generation I My mother bad used sin ng.
