i Public Llbrsrlss Qlva List of Works
Readlng People Would 8eem
to Appréciât«.
The Publishers' Weekly has collected
from public libraries a list of unwrit
ten books that should be available.
Included In this list Is a hook on cook
ery practice, an Illustrated monograph
on cameos or a history of Moslem art.
an up-to-date. comprehensive American
book on Iron and steel metallurgy.
Histories of Armenia and Oregon
are alike demand«»!. A book on cob
blestone fireplaces, with dimensions
and drawings, is «ante«!, and another
on European peasant costumes.
Enough la said on the lack of a new
etiquette book when It Is stated that
the latest good one la dated 1913.
A work to "prevent amateur garden
ers from pulling up a plant Inatead of
a weed" would be as useful ss an In
dex to essays or a treatise on septl^
tanks. The field In concordances Is
enormoua.
Anyone with ten years to spare can
start a Browning concordance at once.
"A history of the novel from the very
beginning and In all countries” Is a
rather more ambitious proposal, pre
paratory reading for which might oc
cupy a few decades.
Balzac's phrase for
books he
dreamed some day of writing,- made fa
miliar by Stevenson, was “enchanted
cigarettes." Here are enchanted ciga
rettes by the gross for publishers. We
may hope that some of the needed
books mentioned by the libraries will
be supplied.
Or will authors persist In writing
the books they want to write Instead
of the books thst are needed?—New

Vaudeville.
The word vaudeville Is a corruption
of Vane de Vlre. the name of two pic
turesque «alleys In the Borage of Nor
mandy. France. The name was origin
ally applied to a song with words re
lating to some story of the day. These
songs were first composed by Oliver
Rnsselln. a fuller living In Vlre. They
were popular and soon spread all over
France, and were called by the name
of the place where Basselln composed
them, namely Vaux de Vlre. As the
origin of the term was lost sight of It
at last took Its present form, raitde-
vllle.
Vaudeville Is now properly used to
signify a play In which dialogue Is In
terspersed with songs Incidentally In
troduced but forming an Important
part of the drama.

Deceived by Reflection.
The rumor that there was such a
place as El Dorado «as so Insistent
centuries ago that Humboldt, the ex

and located the origin of the fable In
a territory between the Essequlbo and
Branco rivers In Guiana.
Great
deposits of mlcn-slnte and talc so
flecked the rock» surrounding a small
lake that the sun did Indeed turn the
area into a vast golden mirror, but as
far as the value of the deposits were
concerned there was nothing to wish

Essence Not From Apple.
What has been known as “apple
oil" or “apple essence," usually amyl
valerate, has been snown by F. B.
Power and V. K. Chestnut, of the
United States bureau of chemistry, to
have no existence In the apple. The
true odorous principle is described
chemically as a mixture of the amyl
esters of formic, acetic and caproic
acids, together with a small amount
of the caprylic ester, and a consider
able proportion
of
acetaldehyde.
There may tie also traces of methyl
and ethyl alcohols. At ordinary tern-
peratures. the essential oil of apples
is a yellowish, somewhat viscid-liquid,
which darkens on keeping and when
slightly cooled hardens Into a con
crete mass from the separation of
small needle-like crystals of a paraf
fin hydrocarbon. The paring« of the
Ben Davis apple yielded 0.0035 i»er
cent of oil. those of the more odorous
crab apple ga«e 0.0043 per cent—rep
resenting only 0.0007 and 0.0013 per
*-ent of the entire fruit. The odorous
substance» exist In varying p.-npor-
tlons. and give slight differences In
edor.
