MINUTES NEW IDEA IN MOTIVE POWER London Newspaper Tells of Meritori ous Pictures Made Quickly by Traveling Artist. Vertical Vanes Used In Windmill« Forestall Possibility of Idleness In Any Weather. PAtMTED IN FIVE While great painters hnve spent weeks—fterhsps months—on a simple study, n young artist Is turning out de lightful views of the sen and country In five minutes, says London Answers. Impossible as tills sounds. It Is a fact, and the artist m question Is Al bert Cronk «haw uf Manchester. It was an extremely dull day. with dark clouds overhead, when a crowd of holiday rankers stopped to watch a smart looking man, mounted on a plat form, transforming a plain piece of canvas Into a marvelous scene of beau ty. Every one forgot the dark, gloomy atmosphere as they were transported, first, to a beautiful spot in North Wales, and then to a picturesque cas tle. And It was all done In 10 min utes. They were pictures to be proud of. too, painted with taste and qn eye to the artistic. As fast ns they were painted so were they sold to the ad miring audience. There Is no doubt that there will be a grent detunnd for “rapid" artists In the near future, when we get some of those promised houses built, and un doubtedly the economical housewife will be on the lookout for good, cheap pictures to beautify the walls of her domain. She need search no further than the traveling artist, who will com plete a picture In five mluutes and charge less for It than almost any art dealer. Here. too. Is an opportunity for any discharged soldiers who are artistical ly Inclined. In a neat little hand book Issued by the traveling painter they will And all the businesslike methods explained clearly aud simply. It Is a really useful short cut to rapid paint ing. MOTION PICTURES IN ITALY Devslopment of Industry In That Country Makes It Second Qnly to the United States. The production /Of motion pictures, says the United States commerce re- pert, Is an Industry for whfch physi cal conditions In Italy nnd the Italian temperament are peculiarly favorable, and consequently this branch of activi ty early attained a high degree of de velopment. Italy now claims to rank second to the United States among the nations of the world In the manu facturing of motion pictures. An Idea of the Importance of this Industry In the economic life of the country can be derived from the fact that the work ing capital employed Is now estimated at 300.it00.000 lire and the actual capi tal Invested nt 100,000.000 lire. There nre elghty-two companies engaged In the production of Alms, of which the greater number are located at Rome, which naturally presents unusual ad vantages from the scenic standpoint. The annual production of new Alins In Italy hns reached 1.000.000 meters, and If It la estimated that forty copies nre made from each negative the total of printed Alma is 04.000.000 meters. Coal, gas. gaso- line. wood, alcohol—ail these fuels nre lacking. The result Is that Inventors I have turned out in force to solve the power problem in new ways. A French Inventor 6as developed n new form of | windmill In which vertical vanes are ' used. The advantages of this form are said to be: Power—no matter In what direction the wind Is blowing; noise-1 less operation; the windmill doe« not j have to turn about, with consequent lose of time; there Is oo danger from strong winds or gales; It develops Ave times the power derived from usual forms of windmills; there Is practical-1 ly no upkeep or o;>eratlng expense. I Tlie builder says that he Is ready to ! undertake the building .of such wind-| mills In nil capacities from one-lmlf to I loo horee power aud over.^ The wlnd- mill Is reeommeuded to be run in con nection with an electric generator and storage • battery, so that, when the wind is blowing, electrical energy is i stored up for use during the calm w<>aiher. However, It Is estimated I that the windmill can operate In prac- | tlcally any weather, and but very few i Idle days are encountered throughout the year, writes Hereward Carrington In Leslie's. This windmill may prove of the greatest practical value to many farmers and those desirous of obtain ing power cheaply and easily. PROOF OF TRUE FRIENDSHIP What More £ould Be Asked of Any Man Than the Sacrifice That Is Here Recorded? There are various ways of evidenc ing true friendship. Sorrow and suf fering hring out the best In others, but Il Is our habit to be syiiptatlietic and not always does It prove that sympa thy and friendship are atln. When a I man will lend you money without col lateral he Is Indeed a friend. But we find our true friends In oth er ways. The other day we were lu a hurry nnd we needed a hair cut. So we beat It Into our favorite barber shop to find our fagorile barber busy, aud a man ahead of us. We were about to depart without the trim we sorely needed, when tl»e’ man ahead of u« spoke up: "You always have the same bart>er. don't youl” “Yep," we replied. "Well, I’m next for his chair, but I'm In no hurry. You just go ahead and take my turn. I’ll wait.” There was friendship for you. and as we thanked him for his kindness we couldn't help remarking: “Greater love hath no rnan than this, that he will give up his place in a barber shop for another."—Exchange. I Attention, Diogenes. Diogenes, wake up! Here's your honest man! Right here in Houston, recently, n man entered the consolidated railway ticket office and purchased a ticket for a child more than five years old. Then he promptly tore the ticket up. it developed that a woman, accom panied by a child, departed from Hous ton w ithin the last few days for a city more than 1.0110 miles away, but did not obtain transportation for the child. When the ticket was bought the pur chaser was asked when the party was going. He replied, “They have already gone." Then It developed that the man. con science-stricken at the thought of cheating the railroads out of the cost of a child's ticket, decided to follow the old adage. "Better late than never."— Houston Post. Loving One's Enemies. 11 Is right that man should love those who have offended 'dm.
