Berlin, Aug 7. >A practical aug-
gestlon to aolve th« vexed problem
of what to do with 100,0U0 army
men who. In compliance with a Spa I
undertaking, are facing discharge.
I. offered by the "economic union of
German professional soldiers” which
has worked out a S' herne to dis
tribute the men In different state-
oyned plants which are at the pres
ent moment lying id!«. The German
government is to subsidize working
expenses of these plants and fix a
Hcale of wages. The operation of the
I plants would constitute a novelty be-
«■ause they would be worked on the
principle of "mutual comradeship,”
and the relationship of employer and
workmen would be eliminated. The
government would take over the
main output of the plants and there
would be planned extensive land set
tlements on state-owned lands which |
workers would cultivate and on
which they would build their own
dwellings after performing eight ,
hours dally factory work. The pro
moters claim that the scheme has al
ready secured official support on
principle.

Tuning Church Bella.
An English clergirruin, says the Lon-
doo Telegraph, was the first to call
the attention of the musical public to
the fact that bells are rtirely In tune,
and that th«- fault can he remedied If
a church hell was originally In tune I
with itself. According to his theory I
a bell must have at least five tones at !
correct Intervals to form a perfect
tnuakr-al chord. At first the work of
tuning was done with a hammer, a
chisel and a file, and a magnificent
tenor r»«*II In Norfolk. England, was
thus reduced three-quarters of an Inch
