Dr. Smith’s Statement
Editor Courier
When I came to Grants Paas 16 «ears ng» llogue
River was flowing between Its banka mu h :h«- «am« as
It is now and I can sea the advantages that accrue to
the community by having this river here. I wan ne»er
mire who dug the ditch for Rogue river until recently,
but I don't know how they got along without It.
Somebody, and I wan never sure who It waa until
lately, bad built the Oregon Cav«-s but their author over
looked making a road, ho peiq.le could have eaay ac «as
to them, but I am planned to »ny tills was a mere over
sight and Bramwell In now going to correct thin.
In the Issue of the Courier May IMh whs an eulogy
on one F. 8. Bramwell, presumably written by II W.
Webber
And. by the way, just who in this II W. Webber,
whose mini« la appended to that eulogy? Perhaps this
Is also none of my buHlnees, but I am curious and pos
sibly the public may be also, beenuae I know only one II.
U. Webber In this territory and 1 am rellai-lv Informed
that only yesterday he strenuously declared to J. M.
Inham and C. A. tfldler, that he did not sign, nor au
thorize the nlgnfng of bln name to the eulogy and that
the first knowledge he had of It wan the evening before
when hl« wife read It In the paper and asked him why
he was monkeying with political matters that didn't con
cern him????!!!! etc., <,r words to that effect, hence If
Webber'» statement wan true, and I assume it to be so,
for I regard Mr Webber tut an unusually truthful Indi
vidual, then who did compose that eulogy, with Its ap
purtenances and all and singular. Its dips, apuiw and
angles, wherein Is attempted to.be detailed the history
of the origin of various of the sew-n wonders of the
world, with the copious marginal and foot notes relating
to the person of their August Creator, and sundry obser
vations explanatory of his other wonderous achievements
that we of common clay might come and kneel down and
worship at this shrine of superior Intelllgrn e, ami with
CaaaiuH I was Impelled to exclaim. "On what kind of
meat doth this, our Caesar, feed that ho In grown ao
great!"
Now Mr. Editor, I should enjoy a keen satisfaction
In believing that one of our cltlwnH was big enough sin
gle-handed to have brought our Irrigation project to Ita
present gratifying situation, but for the fact that it was
brought about by the untiring efforl of the landowners
of the district covering a period long prior Io Mr. Bram
well’s advent on the arene and that those same citizens
voted the district, voted the bonds, and nro paying for
the cost or the project.
And I should rejoice that nny one citizen had
caused various chrome ores to be shipped from Grants
Pass were It not. for the fa t that the Intelligence that
erected the mountain ranges, thereby made It Impossible
for l hose ori s to lie shipped from any other place than
Grants Pass long before my friend Bramwell loft I’tah
to become a light to lighten the Gentles or to pose as
liberty, enllghtnlng the world.
