Minin« blanks at
Poultry raisers have come to real-
tie that the ventilation of the poultry
house Is a very Important matter.
There must be an abundance of fre«b
air without extreme heat or cold, and
without dampness and draft. Proper
conditions cannot be had with the
makeshift, wrongly used ventilators
frequently employed.
One method, which has proved suc
cessful Is to use the straw air strain
er.
A second celling Is built about
six Inches below the regular ceiling

GAVE “SHOW” UNDER GUARD
Peculiar Experience of American Mu

City of Vladivostok.
A belated story of how an Amert-
can lyusical comedy com puny whlcTi
had volunteered to give an entertain
rnent for the troops at Vladivostok
was caught tn that city while the
"reds" held sway, has been received by
the Knights of Columbus from Gurry
McGarry, who is in charge of the wel
fare activities of the order In Siberia.
The troupe was in charge of W. R.
Bandvsrd anti had come from China
to the Russian senport, where they
were held up for several weeks await-
Jng a steamer.
During their stay, every one went
around with a revolver, and the city
took oh the appearance of a «Astern
"boom" town In pioneer day«. During
the period tile bolslievlsts kilted about
22 persons, and many of the actors
had narrow escapes. Several of the
women actresses had to he taken to
and from the theater guarded by a
squad of allied soldiers, and at the
hotel where they stayed a guard was
constantly
posted.
However,
the
American troupe “carried on” for the
doughboys amid al! the panoply of war
anti revolution. There were armed sol
diers Inside the theater, outside be
hind the scenes, and in the box office.

The chacma baboon of South Africa
Is very partial to certain kind« of ani
mal food—scorpion«, spiders, centi
pedes. Insects, lizards and the eggs of
wild birds all befng eaten with re!1«h.
The scorpion la evidently regarded
as a tidbit. If one Is released near a
captive baboon, the latter will hold Its
hand extended over the prey until a
suitable opportunity for attack of-
fer«. Then the hand will descend with
a sweeping slap, which Is followed by
n swift, circular, rubbing motion. This
disables the scorpion, which Is then
picked up and carefully examined un
til the sting is located. The latter Is
then picked out between finger anti
thumb and thrown nwny as far a« pos
sible, after which the scorpion' Is
munched with every apfe-anince of
satisfaction.—William C. Scully, in At
lantic Monthly.

Muslin Ventilators Can Be Used in
the Poultry House to Secure Abun-

or Extremes of Temperature.
If the poultry house is narrow SO
that the wind blows In through the
open windows on the fowls on the
roost put a piece of burlap over the
open space at night, but do not close

No
drafts are po««lble. and the tempera

straw also absorbs a great d»*a! of
moisture.
Another method. In rather wide use.

An improvement on thl« type of ven
tilntor is shown at the right of the

A Ugh' wooden frame cov
ered with muslin is hung from a wire,
which serves ns a track. The frame
can thus le moved sideways over or
away from the window- opening. Screw
eyes on tin- frame allow It to slide
easily over ibe wire. The wire itself
may be fastened either to screw eyes
or ovgr blocks at cither end. To the
left is shown a similar frame, mov
ing up and down. In this case It will
be necessary to arrange some mean«
of holding the frame at the In ight de
sired. Either the |>eg« that fit into

The advantage of the air strainers
