Cor rcHponrience of tbe Ksoclsted Press) -Several,, hundred Germans and Aiistrlans made so attempt to escape by tunnelling from the Moldswortby concentration camp here, recently In order to foil the purpose of the Aus tralian authorities to send them back to Germany and Austria. The military authorities had pre viously notified the Interned Teu tons that tbey were soon to be re turned to their native countries. Shortly Wore they were to 1)0 taken out of thji Internment camp, the au thorities discovered a tunnel 150 feet long which led from one or the barracks underneath tbe fence en closing the camp and thence to the surrace outside. The tunnel was the work of about 150 men and appar ently was begun as soon as the pris oners received warning of Intention to send them home. They had plan ned to break free from the camp on the night befoT the sailing of the steamer for Englaiid. Earth removed from the tunnel had been so distributed around the camp that it was not noticed until the tunnel wa almost v-ompleted. When the tunnel Uas discovered the Germans made a Hostile demonstra tion -but the gu&rds suppressed It.
