Day baa mad as catch our breath at
the contrast between the past and
the present. Today finds tis almost
incredulous as we turn from that
past to our certain future.
And yet the difference Is on the
surface. The deeps run ever the
am. ..
A handful of old men march to
day, and Jay tokens of remembrance
upon the graves of their comrades.
A half century ago these veterans
were fighting their brothers of the
South or North, in their own land.
These veterans who -walk with so
steady a step, so gay, so young, so
forward-looking they, too. hare
fought, but against scientific ea vases
in an alien land. It aeems a Ions
way from that to this from Gettys
burg to the Argon ne, from th can
non ball to shrapnel and poison gas,
from the Monitor to th submarine,
from tfce slow passing of messages
by courier to the wireless and Ihs
airplane. .
But thee are .nothing mere tri
fles Of method, after, all. What
binds the veterans of old to those
of today la th eternal basia of prin
ciple and ideals. Slow has been
the struggle, often marked by blood
and tears, of the race towards hu
man freedom and brotherhood. But
on It move. Each terrible contest
brings It that much nearer to the
goal.
"Your young men shall see via
Ions, and your old men shall dream
dreama; your eons and your daugh
ters shall prophesy."
I'pon the shoulders of us all lies
the burden, as we honor the glor
ious dead, to see that they may not
have died In vain.

presented to the different clubs for
approval. As only four members
were present from Ashland they
could not guarantee approval of the
plan by the Ashland Commercial
club, but they themselves were hear
tily in favor of the move.

These men are to meet at Ash
land, -whose club will later appoint
a committee, on Wednesday, June 4,
at 6 p. ni., and it Is planned to make
speedy headway in getting out the
proposed literature.
After the following resolution
was read toy O. S. Blanchard. the
meeting adjourned:
WHEREAS the people of Jackson
and Josephine counties have con
sidered that a hard surfaced roid-
way, 1 6 feet in width, should be con
structed on the 'Pacific highway, and
the highway commission of uregon
has concurred in that view by order
ing such paving,

Commercial Clubs of Ashland, -Med

mail train time at Grants Pass, ef
fective June 1st, has been received:
No. 13 (southbound), 8:22 a. m.
N'o. 14 (northbound), 9 a. m. No.
54 (northbound),- G:16 p. m.
All imiils close at the postofflce 30
minutes before train time and to In
sure dispatch, all outKolne mall
should be deposited In the postofflce
10 -minutes before closing time. This
Is particularly important when mall
Is intended for No. 54, since this
train carries all tlhe mail for the
northern, eastern nnd central states.
There has been no change of time
announced for train No. IB (south
bound), the mall for which -will con
tinue to close at the postofflce at
9 p. m.
