MONTANA MINE OUTPUT
60 PER CENT NORMAL
Helena, Mont., May ,26. In sev
eral phases, there are startling con
trasts In labor conditions and in the
cost of living, in .Montana today
compared with the era preceding
this country's entrance into the
great war.
While no authentic figures for the
pay 60 days are available, It was
stated in March, by a committee of
the state assembly which Investigate
ed the cost of necessities In the state
that prices had risen, on an average,
about 90 per cent, in thl state, since
the world struggle began.
The mining industry is the only
basic industry In the 'state running
on a sub-normal .basis. The latest
figures available tor the Anaconda
Copper Mining company, the largest
employer in Butte, and In the state,
is for March. It shows a production
of about 60 per cent normal. It is a
rule that the production of other
Butte mines will, on an average,
hold on a level with that of Anacon
da. It is hoped the mines, not later
than July, will return to a normal
basis.
