CHINNOCK, Lawyer, First National Bank Bldg., Grants Pass, Oregon. - -, , (Continued from page 1) us 50-00, And of course If they fin ish the road the government will maintain R for all time to come without putting the expense on the state of Oregon. With this In view tbny have already appropriated 1400,000 for an artillery school at Corvallls." The first thought Is to finish the Pacific highway; then the Roosevelt highway, giving two great roadways from the Orttlsh Columbia lino to the Mexican line, and the building of laterala between the two lines, whlh Is a natural sequence wher ever trunk lines have been built, would mean the Immediate develop ment of this country, and the only way In which a mountainous country like ours can 'be developed." The proposition of voting bonds for the Roosevelt military highway will 'be on the ballot at the June special election. It provides a bond Issue of (2,500,000, which when matched with the government's ap propriation will provide a fund of $5,000,000 for the building of a highway from 'Astoria through Clat sop, Unooln, Lane, DotiKlas, Coos and Curry counties to the Califor nia state line. It is estimated that the proposed road will open a territory which will add to the tax rolls, and that the auma secured aa taxes will provide for the bond Issue. The -highway system of California haa been re sponsible for a great part of that state'a prosperity. It la estimated that 20 per cent of tourists In Cal ifornia become Investors, and thus the good roada which invite tourists are directly responsible for vast In vestments. California will vote on a total of $40,000,000 for roads; Washington will vote on about $25,- 000,000 and Oregon will vote on $5,000,000, thla five million to pro vide absolutely needed trunk high way. "Please let me know what you can about the death of my brother. The lost letter we received from him said he was In a hospital suffering ty phoid. Next came the war depart ment telegram telling that he was killed in action." The answers read as follows. "Your son was shot In the stom ach -by German snipers half way be tween the villages of Very and Eclls fontalne." "Your brother was killed on the night of November 1 about the cen ter of the town of Waereghan, Bel gium. German airplanes had ap peared over the town and had forced the people to hide for safety. As your brother with several other sol diers was descending into a cellar a bomb struck nearby and threw nlra against the wall, killing him instant ly." In cases where one shell killed several men, Lieutenant Dyment bunches the deaths and describes all In one letter. Copies of the letter o to relatives of each of the men. No facts, no matter how had, are withheld. Recently the lieutenant had to write the Washington father of a boy who was so badly wounded that his comrades did. not dare move him and had to leave him behind to din when they changed their no sition. Lieutenant Dyment estimates that the Ninety-First suffered about 5,000 casualties. Of this number, between 1,400 and 1,500 were fa talities. With every letter, Lieutenant Dy ment sends a short sketch of the history of the fighting of the Ninety- First so that those who have lost relatives may, with the aid of a good map trace the principal movements of the division. Lieutenant Dyment this summer will resume his duties aa head of the Journalism department of the University of Washington. Before coming to Washington he was the head of the Journalism department of the University of Oregon.
