The Roosevelt Highway associa
tion, with headquarters at the Im
perial hotel in Portland. Is working
diligently to secure passage of the
measure at the June election which
will mke possible the building of
this road.
This bill, which passed both
Branches ot the last legislature
without a negative vote authorize
the issuance of bonds to the amount
of '$2,500,000 tor the purpose of
Constructing 'the Roosevelt high
way along the coast ot Oregon, upon
the condition, ' however, that the
federal government appropriate an
equal amount tor the same purpose.
It the government fails to do this,
then no part of these bonds can be
Issued by the state, and It the fed
eral government does appropriate a
Ilk amount for this purpose it will
(give to the State of Oregon all the
advantages ot this road at a cost ot
50 cent on the dollar.
Those who have studied the mat
ter thoroughly claim that auto li
cense fees already provided by law
will be sufficient to not only pay all
the principal and all the Interest on
the present bonds of the state and
those now authorized to be Issued,
but will also pay the principal and
interest of these proposed bonds.
The people ot the coast country
are deserving ot this highway. They
are contributing to the cost of build
ing the Pacific highway and other
state roads and It is not more than
fair that the rich coast country 1e
made accessable. Not only that, but
the Roosevelt highway will open up
, rich agricultural district that will
soon add millions of dollars worth
ot taxes to the state's tarrolls.
The coast people are assiting us
to build our highways, now let us
reciprocate by casting our ballots In
favor of the great "Roosevelt high
way.
The Germans had their dance, now
let them pay the fiddler. It will be
remembered that at the beginning of
the war German commanders told
their soldiers to "steel themselves'
and become immune to the pleas for
mercy.
Rosebnrg announces that home
grown strawberries 'are on the mar
ket in that city. Not ahead of
Grants Pass, we have them, too.

be held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

at the high school, and on Friday
night the graduation exercises will
