Yclephone 131, - luit evening at the Church of Christ every available seat was tak en, many were atandlng and some turned away. The orchestra was at lis best and people ssng with spirit and power. , The audience gave careful atten tion to the sermon on "Spongers." It was a message specially (for men. Mr. Drake took the position that since ell were enjoying the natural resources furnished so abundantly by God, and since we, who live In communities where the church Is wielding Its helpful Influence, are reaping the "benefits of this Influ ence, we cannot be honest with God unluss we thank him for his re sources and help foster ami protect Christianity, which has given us our civilization. He defended his posi tion fearlessly. He declared that the man who falls to be a working factor In upbuilding the things of God, yet appropriates all 111a blessings, Is a sponger on God and ought to realize it. The logic of the position, It Is reported, Is causing many to consid er seriously the clali.ts of the gospel. There were nine baptisms during the day. Saturday evening dir. Roberts showed himself to be a forceful and Interesting speaker in his presenta tion of the subject, "The Living God." Meetings will continue each night this week. HIGH SCHOOL NOTES 4 v- A lurne crowd gathered in the high school auditorium Friday even ing at 8 o'clock, to witness the pro gram given by the liternry society. The program was splendidly given, and introduced much hitherto un known talent In some of the high school students.. A great deal of credit Is due Mrs. Gunnell, who has worked unceasingly on the different parts of the program, and especially the play, which was a very credit able comedy in two acts. The program as presented follows: Selection Orchestra Piano solo Norman Kendall Reading Bertha Calhoun Solo.... Annie Nellson Selection Orchestra Play. ."Box of Monkeya" Oast Sierra Bengallne.... Pauline Swacker Mrs. Ondego Jones......Warton Sabln Gulnlvere Landpoore..Murlal Meyers Edward Ralston .....Landa Gillette Ohauncey Oglethorpe...., . Harold Lundburg The action of the play centers around the love affair of Sierra Ben galee and Edward Ralston. Sierra's aunt, Mrs. Ondego Jones, who cher ishes an ambition to belong to so cieties' 'most select circle, does not approve of the match, as 'Ralston has neither money nor Utile. When Ral ston comes to the house to see Sierra he Is 'placed In laughable positions to keep from being recognized by the aunt. , A distinguished guest, tMIs Guln lvere 1-andpoore arrives, and in the aunt's absence tells Sierra of her ambition to acquire American fas cinations. She wants to be What the American girls are declared to be as much fun as a box of mopkeys. Sierra agrees to teach Guinevere slang If she In turn may be taught society manners. , Guinevere's lover, Chauncey Ogle thorpe arrives suddenly, and It proves that Oglethorpe and Ralston are partners in a gold mine, which soems to have no gold. Just as the two couples reach a conclusion to be married in spite of all remon strances, Mrs. Ondego Jones returns bringl'tg word of the success of the boy's mine. ' She Immediately gives her best wishes to the young foVUs, and 'l ends happily. . I The orchestra, which played sov eral numbers during, the .' evening, gave some most enjoyable ' selec tions,, MThe .tjnen)bers are: Lerqy HeBtpn, Arthur, Close, Cedrio Fields, Haroid Isham, Waldo Baker, Robert Nellson, Hnrry Edgerton and Carlot ta WlLSman. . v SMALL ROOMS USEO (Continued frost page 1) otsco, there are many former prison er on parole from the "rock" en gaged In various lines of business who roport once a month to the commandant. The "big rock" rlses.almost sheer from the bay waters. The parade ground bad to be hewn from the solid rock. Above the parade ground similar hewing was done for the prison buildings, Barracks for offi cers and the soldiers stationed as guards and administrators rise from near the 4ay and almost are mor tised Into the rocks. Many other difficulties were overcome. Because of the profusion of flow ers over the island and festooned about Its rock walls the "big rock" by Its officers 4s called, "our Jewel." Skirting the island runs- a railed walk supported by, and hung out from the rocks. The walla above and .below the walk are a mass of flowers, which seemingly grow out from the rocks. To gat the flowers to grow prisoners would drill pocket In the rocks, throwing a few handfuls of earth and plant the seed. Evcape frpm the. Island .nearly Impossible. Attempts made to swim the tew hundred yards to the main land have failed. Several men have been drowned in the effort. A few have escaped by rafts made of drift wood, however. At night a powerful searchlight plays about the Island from a lighthouse on the island. COMIN'G EVENTS i Apr. 1 4, Monday Col. Leader speaks at High school, 8 p. m.
