Experience seems to Indicate," says
tha Surgeon General, "that persons
whose reslsiaoce has been weakened
by an attack of Influenza are peculiar
ly susceptible to tuberculosis. With
millions of Its people recently affected
with liifluenxa this country now p
fers conditions favoring tha spread of
tuberculosis."
One Million Consumptives In the
United States.
"Then you consider this a serious
menacer wss asked. "In my opinion
It Is, though I hasten to add It Is dis
tinctly one against which the people
can guard. 8o far as one can estimate
there are at present about one million
casea of tuberculosis In tha United
States. There, Is unfortunately no
complete census available to show ex
actly the number of tuberculous per
sona In each state despite the fact that
most of the states have made tha dis
ease reportable. In New York city,
where reporting has been in fore for
many years, over 85,000 cases of tu
berculosis are registered with the De
partment of Health. Those familiar
with the situation believe that the ad
dition of unrecognized and unreported
casea would make the number nearer
(50,000. The very careful health sur
vey conducted daring the past two
years tn Framlngham, Maaa, revealed
200 cases of tuberculosis In a popula
tion of approximately 10,000. If these
proportions hold true for the United
States as a whole they would indicate
that about one In every hundred per
sons la tuberculous. . Each of these
constitutes a source of danger te ba
guarded against,,"
. What te Do.
In his statement to tha public Sur
geon General Blue points out bow
thoee who have had influenza abeuld
protect themselves against tuberculo
sis. "All wbo have recovered from In
fluenza," eaya the 8urgeon General,
"should have their lungs carefully ex
amined by a competent physician. ' la
fact. It la deslrabl to have several ex
aminations made a month apart. Such
examinations cannot be made through
tCe clothing nor can they be .earned
out in two or three mlnntea,' If ,tbe
lungs are found to be free from tuber
culosis every effort should be made to
keep them aa -This can be don by
right living, good food and plenty of
fresh air." , .,, , ,: ...., ..
Danger Signs.
The 8urgeon General warned espe
cially against certain ..danger . jlgna,
such as "decline ' and "colds' which
hang on."
. These, he explained, were often the
beginning of tuberculosis. "If you do
not. get well .promptly,. It your cold
aeems to hang on or your, health, and
strength declfne, remember that thee.
