To Insure against loss or theft ot Liberty loan bonds, owners are being urged by the treasury to have their coupon bonds registered although the pro cedure results in a great amount ot work and expense for the govern ment now that the number ot bond owners runs above 30,000,000. The registration can be arranged at most banks, and is done without cost to the owner. After registration, u a bond Is accidentally lost, stolen, or destroyed, the government will pay it at maturity Just the same, and In terest checks will be mailed to the bond owner twice a year without requiring nim to go to the trouble of clipping coupons and presenting them at a bank. "The tact that bonds of the First Liberty loan or bonds of the Second Liberty loan are converted Into bonds bearing higher rate ot Interest does not affect the dates on which interest Is payable," explains a treas- urr announcement. Interest is paid on bonds ot the first loan, regardless of whether tbey tare been converted, on June 15 and December 15: on bonds of the sec ond loan. May 15 and November 15; third loan, March 15 and September 15; fourth loan, April 15 and Octo ber 15. . The treasury also explains that owing to the mechanical difficulties of preparing millions of interest checks on registered bonds, coupon bonds will not be exchanged for reg istered bonds or registered bonds transferred on the books from one owner to another, during a month before an interest paying date of each particular loan. For example. exchanges or transfers can noi oe arranged for First Liberty lorn bonds between May 15 and June H; and between November 15 and De cember 16. For the second loan, these dates would be April 15 to May 16; and October 15 to Novem ber 16. For the third loan, reoru ary 15 to March 16; and August 15 September 16. For the f?nrtn loaa, March 15 to April 16 ; ana ep- tnbcr l". v October 16 This arrangement Is explained the treasury as follows: During any period when the transfer books for any particular loan are closed no transfers of reg istered bonds of such loan or inter changes of registered ' and coupon bonds of such loan will be permitted, but if requests for transfer of any mifh reeistered bonds or inter changes of any Bucb registered and coupon bonds are received during any such closed period, the requests will receive attention upon the re opening of the books. "The semi-annual Interest will be naid to the oerson in whose name bonds are registered as shown by the books of the treasury depart ment on the date the books close reirardless of any disposition that may be made by the registered hold er d urine the closed period. If. cou pon bonds are presented for ex change for registered bonds during such closed periods, the coupon next due should be detached and collect ed In the usual manner. It register ed bonds are presented for exchange for coupon bonds during such closed periods, Interest on such registered bonds will be paid in the usual man ner, and the coupon bonds delivered upon such exchange after the re opening of the books will have the coupon maturing on the Interest day for which the books were closed and prior coupons detached." How an Am erican Infantry regiment captured a German band of 60 pieces and forc ed the Huns to play the "Star Spang led Banner" is told ;in letter re ceived here recently by Rev. Thomas Allan, a retired Methodist minister, from his eon, Corporal E. W. Allan, of the 319th Infantry. Corporal Allan, in his letter, says that the regiment, in a surprise at tack without a barrage, took the German band intact. As the victor ious Yankees were en route to the rear with the prisoners, they cauea a halt along the road, and by whist ling and singing gave the Germans a working idea of the "Star Spangled Banner." Just as soon as the Huns had mas tered the selection, the American soldiers lined the prisoners up and forced them to play the national an them of the United States, to which tune they marched to the prison cages.
