Outnumbered, In some cases eight to one, the brave Yankees fought with tigerish furjrj snd a small detachment held at bay' a whole regiment of 1,200 Huns. I The American casualties were about' 100, some ISO of whom were cut! off and fell Into the hands of the Boches. But the German losses In j killed were double the number off American casualties, which gives a J fair Idea of the ferocity of the light-' lug. CARD OF THANKS . "Between the devil and the deep sea." With little Netherlands entirely surrounded by Germans on three sides and the North sea on the other, she occu pies, and has occupied since the be ginning of the war, a pretty tight place. Belgium bounds the country on the west, but the Germans have occupied that territory since the first month of the war. Germany, while trying to pull the " wool over the eyes of the Hollanders by shouting wolf! when America seised Dutch ships, which were to be amply paid for and necessary foodstuffs sent to. Holland In ex change, is at this time trying to fore Holland Into an alliance with herself by compelling the shipment of supplies through The Netherlands and possibly, later, troops. It Is a precarious time for Queen Wllhelmlna whose government has straggled honestly for nearly four yean to maintain strict neutrality with astounding success. Exchange prisoners of both England and Ger many have been treated with the same courtesy and care. The gov ernment has spent huge sums in pro- Tiding comforts . and conveniences for the people of bo.th nations with in her borders. She has been forced to sacrifice like the people of the waning nations. She has maintain ed her army at its maximum peace strength. And now, if it pleases the kaiser and his war-lust lords, that lamb like nation will be torn to shreds by the pack of wolves Just as Belgium . was rended, her goods carried Into Germany, large levies placed on her cities and bled white to make a Oerman holiday. We believe that Holland, which Is democratic In spirit. Is In sympathy with the allies, and were she as fa vorably situated ' as Italy, Switzer land or Belgium, where allied aid could be given her, she would have long since been fighting on the n!de of freedom. But as It Is she can do nothing more than Insist on her .rights and take what Germany will give her. ....... A man named Qutentag u- v,.B. Ry noon the Germans had swung a salient about 6000 yards wide and 4000 yards deep about Vlllers-Dre-tonneux and were holding the tows strongly. ' This they continued to do until 10 o'clock Thursday night, when the British delivered a sur prise counter-attack. According to prisoners the enemy bed no eipecta tlon of further trouble from' the Urltlah last night and were sitting snugly in their new positions when the storm broke. At the sppolnted hour the ftrltlsh gunners put down s sharp barrage and the British Infantry drove for ward. The attack was made from the southwent on Vlllers-Rretonneua snd these two. forces drove In to ward the eastern part of the town In a converging movement As a re sult the British have bottled up the town. The British Infantry Immediately rnshed the town and heavy hand-to-hnnd fighting ensued, the bayonet being used freely. Six hundred pris oners were taken here slone, and a great number of the enemy killed. The town was virtually rleared, and today only a few scattered pockets of Germans are In the place. In the Bols d'Aqnenne, just west of Villers-Bretonneux, one Oerman officer snd 40 men surrendered to day. In a counter-attack, a large part of the old British positions about Villers-Bretonneux were re gained. Today those Germans who still remained In the battle could not get out and their comrades were un able to get In through the narrow neck to assist, them. , . - London, Apr. it.
