Noth ing further has been heard today from a steamer In distress off the Newfoundland coast which sent nut calls' for assistance yesterday. The message was picked up by another ship nearer shore and relayed to government stations. Naval - au thorities suggested' the' call might have come from the Cunard liner Auranla, reported to have been dam aged 'by a German Submarine, but still afloat and making her way to ward port. ' ' H. OLKMAN OF OHKGON . IUE8 IX FHEXCH CAMP Washington, Feb. 9. The wound ing In action of two more 'American soldiers Is reported. Both were In fantry privates and were only Bllght ly Injured. Henbert Oleman, of Marahfleld, Ore., died from empye ma. Two others have died from- air plane accidents and two from gun shot wounds. None were killed In action. v With the appointment during the past weelf of a Josephine county executive committee on the' thrift stamp campaign under the leader ship of H. W. Clarke, the work to be done fur the government along this line during the year 1918 will soon be welt under way. The press over the whole country It heartily supporting the movement, and every one la expected to help thli Im portant work to the limit. The fol lowing very rlear statement was taken from a recent copy of a trade paper, "The Valve World." "The best method the government has yet devised for raising money to prosecute the war and for encour aging thrift and the formation of saving habits among the people Is that represented by the war savings stamps and the war savlnga certifi cates. 'The chief advantages or this method are the tmallness or the amounts that may be Invested, ant the ever present opportunities for Investment for It Is just as truly Investing to buy a twenty-five cent war atamp toward a war certificate as It Is to buy a one hundred dollar Liberty bond. . "This method romes nearer than any other we have to that now gen erally In effect In Great Britain Money there may be Invested In war loans or bonds or savings at any time. There are ne periodical spasms of advertising and selling. Just a steady, common sense, Immensely effective Investing business. ' "The war tarings stamp cornea within the reach of practically every man, woman and child In this coun try. And It Is surprising how the war atamp leads up to the war cer tificate, once the habit of buying these stamps Js encouraged. "The boy who puts his spare pen nies Into war savings stamps is do ing hit share toward winning war Just as fully as the banker who puts his spare thousands Into iLlberty bonds. Buy war savings stamps and turn them Into war savings certifi cates and you will not only help to win the war but Invest your money wisely." The amount raised by this method In Great Britain reaches an amaz ing total, and It is hoped that the boys and girls of the United States will be Just as willing to help on their end as their overseas cousins. No Investment no matter how small will be lost. Whether In thrift stamps at 2" cents or In war savings certificates at $5 the money can al ways be obtained at the ost office on short notice. Make a beginning this week and start every member of the family on the way to being a government bond holder. WAR SAVINGS STAMPS PRO MOTION DEPARTMENT. New York, Feb. 9. The Krupp works. Germany's famous munitions plant. Is being put under ground for fear of American air raids, accord ing to word brought here today by passengers on the Nleuw Amster dam rrom Rotterdam. From all Informed passengers the following nncen8ored facts and opin ions were learned. Germany Is planning a submarine campaign' In the Pacific. Desertions in the Germany army are Increasing. Holland has only two months of provisions. American prisoners are treated worse In Germany than English and French. Holland may enter' the war unless the alliea and the United States sup ply her needs. - Fear that the ship brought Ger man fungus 16 ruin the American crop was reported as one reason' for the minute examination of the 1,506 passengers. Even face powder, soap and tooth paste'-were seized In the) search. The result of the search was nnrevealed. Elaborate examination was nec essary here because the Nleuw Am sterdam did not touch at Halifax. British port of call. ; ? ... A lZ'-;- ... .a j. . ... ... v. . a a I II' I L A .. T , 01195 . P.O.B. In some way or another they have been chipped off from rocks, or hardened from clay or similar nod ules. Sometimes they have been rubbed smooth, or partly so, by friction. But although they may be added to in some rare Instances by coatings of hardened mud, they certainly do not and cannot "grow," as do living things, by any power within them.
