LANDS The Chamber of Commerce is urg ing the Immediate opening of the Oregon-California railroad lands. In this time of war the prompt opening of these lands la of more than local 4A..-M Tn. i - , iiuifvmuvTi i uuuMuua vi mviv a w productive land In thla O. t C. grant lying close to Grants Pass could be made to produce crops for which this nation and our allies are clam oring, if only the general land office vmilfl ua its vtt ftlao n Ananln them at once to entry and settle ment. . To wait till spring for this opening will be too late to do more than clear some of the land, as no crop can be put tn In time to ma ture before fall. If opened now, clearing can start Immediately and grain can be planted which will re ceive sufficient moisture to grow a rop by fall. It Is Indeed regretable that the commissioner of the general land of fice has received the Impression that the lands In this vicinity are Inac cessible to Inspection In the winter and on the strength of that Impres sion hat deferred the opening of the lands until spring. In a recent letter to the Grants Pass Irrigation District Hon. W. C. Hawley has Indicated that the commissioner may be Induc ed to change his views on the situa tion, and has requested data to be sent htm which Is now in all prob ability In his hands. It Is to still further advance the cause that the Chamber of Com merce has forwarded a resolution to the Oregon delegation In 'congress. urging the Immediate opening of the land. This matter has an Important bearing to the Irrigation problem for over 2,000 acres of this land lies within the Crants Pass Irrigation . i i , - . s il. i - a . isistnci, man irie opening 01 mem it) entry and settlement will greatly Im prove the prospects of a satisfactory Ivtm A m am A t n unnnAniixnl ; early construction of the project. So Important Is this to the pros- perlty of the country, so pre-emln-ently In line with the nations de- ' - mand for Increased food supply, that . we look confidently to the broad- minded public official that he will not let departmental convenience and red-tape prevent the Immediate opening of there lands to entry and settlement. Josephine county Is a veteran in this "going over the top" business. Our atteutlon has been culled to the editorial of Monday, in which President WiUon was severely crlt IcUed. to which waul to say most emphatically that e Intended no disrespect to the president, who has had and is still receiving our most loyal and consistent support. It Is probable that the most Important feature lu the conduct of this war, from an American standpoint, con sists in the fact that the nation Is directed by an executive of such pa triotism and wisdom, and to the fact that he la so patriotic and wise, is due the wonderful support he la re ceiving from the people, regardless of sect or party. WILL O. STKEL. UNCLE SAM SAYS TO PUT UP MORE FRUIT Washington. Jan. 30. During 1917, so Uncle Sam estimates, 800.- 000,000 Jars of fruit of all kinds were canned by the housewives of the United States. While this Is an enormous quantity still he Is not satisfied and is asking that this year 1.500,000,000 Jars of fruit be put np. The saving is held by the govern ment to be Immense and the quality of the canned article Is Just what the family wants. Manufacturers of fruit Jars have been making shipments for the last two or three weeks and have warned dealers that by waiting until April or May to place orders, they will very likely not get what they want. Factories cannot take care of orders now as they are wanted and are right now oversold up to the middle of August. For this reason they ask the trade to take as many Jars now as It in possible to get. giv ing them an April 1 date. The food administrator will lift the restric tions on sugar so that the crop may be cared for. CORRECT TIME EOR With the American Army in France, Jan. 12. (Correspondence of the Associated Press) Correct time soon will be transmitted to the entire American expeditionary force! over its own system ot telegraph lines. At present wireless station! each day at a certain hour pick from the air figures flashed from Paris J by which the clocks of the army are i - cyncbronized. This method does not i insure absolute accuracy. When the last links of the tele gaph system are connected, each day at 1 1 o'clock a simultaneous sig nal will be Kent to every station so that through the existing zone, and, later on, at the front as well, clocks and watches will show the same time. This synchroni7atiun is desir able under present conditions and.lt is an absolute necessity with troops at the front when, for Instance, or ders may specify that some operation Is to be carried out at one point at a certain time and another operation at another point at another time. The success of both operations may depend upon them being launched virtually on the se-ond. Miles upon miles of telegraph lines strung on poles labled "V. S. A." now stretch through France. They may be found running to base ports, zig zagging through the Instruction zone over hills, through a valley, along a roadside. On some of the poles there AM1CAN SOLDIERS are cross-beams supporting In many canes as many as ten wire. There is a complete system of operators and central exchanges aa well as considerable force of linemen and re pairmen Quit a number of whom worked for telephone and telegraph companies In the United Statea be fore the war. The "servlee" leaves little if anything to be desired. Charlemagne Waa a Qerman.
