' 4 Possibly rains; warmer to- night 4 THE GERMAN-AMERICAN . llueh baa been written of late re tarding the position of American citizens of Teutonic ancestry.' They are many of them finding It d I in tuit to place themselves, and are trying to avoid making a mistake by maintaining what they consider a discrete silence. . Bnt there n no occasion for aucb a cltlaen to bed (re or play the hypo crite. He knows, down In his heart of, hearts that the success of Ger man arms, driven, by the relentless ambition of the - present -German government, means a political world which he cannot countenance. And be, more even than the nativboro American, can show his loyalty and aoand Judgment, by proclaiming the justs sea of the allied straggle tor freedom. The thought is very forcefully and accurately examplified in a state ment recently made by Prof. Mas E. Meyer of the University of Missouri. It doubtless represents ' accurately the attitude of thousands and thou sand of American citizens of Teu tonic ' extraction who are loyal Americans before they are any thing else, and who in the pres ent districting crisis, have not lost their reasoning faculties or their sense of perspective and real values. The sentiments expressed are de serving of a careful perusal. "I am thoroughly familiar with the present organization of the Ger man social body and with its cul mination, the present German gov ernment. I have lived in Germany 25 years. I was horn there. I was educated there. I spent 19 years of my life in German educational insti tutions, from the kindergarten to the research laboratory. - I confess that at the beginning of this war my sympathies were divided. The Oer man nation had many justifiable complaints against ' Its neighbors. But whatever wrongs the German nation may have suffered In the past from other . nations, the German government daring this war has had more than one opportunity to have than aet right and to terminate the war. Its actions show that world dominations, not justice, is Its alni. I sympathize with the German peo ple, but not with their government. Perhaps you would appreciate your American citizenship better if, like me, you had been born and brought up in Germany. If Germany wins tbis war, 50 years hence its govern ment will rule the American peo ple, I do not want my children to be put under the yoke which I es-; caped toy coming to 'America. My' hope Is that the German nation, my ' relatives and friends, will enter In-! to an International organization for; peace and Justice. But the German ; government, this fearful danger to our future, can be overthrown only, by raising armies, not by sitting I County Judge and Commlaaionera ...........
