OF E THE CONGRESSIONAL. VISIT Ten congressmen landed In Eng land yesterday on an unofficial trip of Inspection of the battle fields of Europe. It Is reported that others will follow. It Is not allowed to be an official visitation because of this country's effort to keep out of an al liance which might entail obliga tion which it doe not want to as sume. We think this a splendid move. We wish every member of both houses could majte the trip. This party is to visit not only England. ut Belgium, France and Italy? They will gain a good deal of first hand Information which could not come to them otherwise. A knowledjs of actual conditions In' the war zone honld go a long way In qualifying legislators to make laws to help the situation. After all has been said and done, this country Is far from awake to the reaj seriousness of the situation which is facing the civilized world today. It is not so much the pres ence of the armies of Germany and her allies In the field. It is the spirit the ambition, the determination that Is hack of those armies. An awak-j enlng to what the spirit has done to Belgium and northern France and which would be the fate of America should the war not be settled on European fields, should inject a lit tle pep into legislation at Washing ton. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure; so a de cisive, hard blow early in the game will avoid the necessity of many such blows later. Corvallis. Oct. 23. Mites which spin a fine web about an entire or chard tree and then attark Its fol iage are reported to A. L. Lovett, en tomologist of the Oregon Agricul tural experiment station from- the vicinity of Milton. Freewater, Iji Qrand and Portland and from Van couver. Wash. Professor lvett says the Invasion Is of unusual Interest to orchardlsts. The pest Is not the common orchard mites, he declares, but a species not previously thought serious. From present Indications It seems advis able for growers to watch for this mite. The leaves It attacks turn yellow and then fall to the ground. Where the mite Is present,, two applications of spray are suggested. One should be made in the fall. just as soon as the foliage drops from the tree and the second In the spring when the buds are swelling well but the leaves are not out. Only the trees showing Infestation need the fall application. ' ' Commercial lime-sulphur at a one-to-twelve strength is used for both applications.' ( MONTANA W1M, KAIHK SILVER FO.XKS KOIt Fi ll Butte. oMntana. Oct. 2. Raisins of silver foxes, whose pelts are sell ing for $1,500 each, may become a new Industry for this state. Battleships of money and cannons of finance are just as effective in planting a knock out blow In the solar-plexis of kals- eriem as bullets and shells. Examination of reports made by this year1 I'nlver slty of Oregon students on their reg istration cards, would seem to en courage the belief that women stu dents are naturally more religious than the men. Eighty six girls have no church preference, as against ISti boys who express none. The only churches attended by more men than women students are the Lutheran, the Catholic and the Church of Jesus Christ. All other denominations show more girl worshippers than boys. . - The most popular church among the girls isr the, Presbyterian, for which 93 students expressed prefer ences. This church also claimed more students throughout the stu dent body than airy other. The Crlstlan and Methodist churches each were named 50 time on the cards of men students.
