Oregon Dally Newnpeper Pub. Aara. Aadlt Bureau of Circulation. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1017. 4 OREGON WEATHER Generally cloudy. THE FARMERS The message of . tha country's need for the country'! turplua sav lugs to prosacuta tha .war for de mocracy waa carried out Into the rural districts of tha county last Bight. And tha message was well referred. The charge that tha farmers of America are unpatriotic Is a gross libel on one of the grandest classes of men alive today. It is hard for the fanners aa a class to give expres sion to their collective thoughts and attitude because, from the nature of their lives, they are scattered and aot frequently found en masse. But they love America and the Ideals for which she stands as loyally as any other class of our people, a fact that la oftlmes proven when oppor tunity offers. A. hundred years ago, before there was any United States in fact, Israel Putnam waa plowing In hla rocky New England field with a team of horses. Up dashed a horseman with the story of the British advance up on Lexington. Putnam did not atop to think of what would become of hla crop. Re did not look for some one else to finish hla task. He left the team standing hitched to the plow and hurried to answer the call of hla country. The same liberty which Put nam hastened from hla farm to de fend. Is at stake today. Carry the message to the farmers of America and the same ready response will be forthcoming. They are not asked to shoulder the flit-lock and take the Held. They are aaked to loan, out of the moneys received from 2 wheat, $1.50 potatoes, $1.25 corn and $2 onions; loan their surplus to Uncle Sam that be may defend the libertl which they are enjoying. It was the Israel Putnams of 1778 that brought freedom to the strug gling colonies. Be assurred that the Israel Putnams, the tillers of the soil, will do their share in 1917 to preserve It, not only for themselves but for all the world. NEXT ON PROGRAM Next week will be "Hover Drive Week," Patriotic housewives throughout the broad land will be asked to sign pledges to help win the war by helping the national ad ministration In its plans to conserve the supplies of food needed by our armies abroad and those of the al lies. It Js not' Intended that a Mingle American citizen shall deny himself of all the food, of excellent quality, that he needs, or for that mat tor, that he wants (which In many rases V KXf KA WKlflHT AXU EXTRA FANCY PACK Carson's VK SELL KINNEY & TRUAX GROCERY QUALITY KIKKT We Carry a I - Loose Boohs and Forms Demaray's sta&stre MASONIC TEMPLE, OKA NTS PASS are two quite different things.) It doea ask, however,- that Americans eat the more perishable foods, can and dry their present surpluses and save to the largest possible degree the few staplea, such aa wheat, meat, fata and sugar, that are sorely need ed by our allies. So far, the campaign for these pledgee has been conducted by the school children. Cards have been distributed pretty generally through out the country and will be collected soon. Owing to teachers' Institute early next week, the schools will be closed and the work of the children In this important cause is being done In ad vance. Not all ot us can serve In the trenches or risk our Uvea going over the top across no man's land, but all of us can take part in "Hoo ver Drive" to save wheat and meat, butter and sugar .for the men who are fighting our battle in Europe. We are not asked to stint ourselves or go without food, but simply to eat wisely and without waste, and to use substitutes for bacon and ham, wheat foods and other con centrated foods that can readily be shipped across the water. One wheatless meal a day, one meatless day a week will keep the non-combatants in Europe from having eat less days most of the time. Remem ber that the person who wastes food during war time Is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. This war will not be won on the battle' line alone, but on the bread line as well, and every one of us can be soldiers in the fight for conserving our food supplies. Pledge card week takes place be tween October 29 and November 3. Every loyal housewife should bewlll ing and glad to promise co-operation with the food administration department. We can render efficient service hy using home grown sup plies, which will save transporta tion, by practicing the gospel of the clean plate, by cooking no more than necessary, by using corn or rye bread for at least lone meal each day, by substituting chicken, rabbit or fish in place of beef and pork, by True Friendship e Mirror.
