A million ef oar young men will soon be pre paring themselves to go out Into the struggle for freedom. Ninety-nine other million Americans will, for the time, stay at home. But the ef-4 Sdency of that army of a million U1 depend more npon the attitude; the work, the planning, the support of those who stay at home, than up on their own abilities. In any army, the Individual looses his Idea ty in a great machine which Is effi cient as the nation behind it is loyal and determined, and not otherwise, Those of na who are not permitted to take part In this great drama on the scene of action are going to be called npon to do our little "bits" on a much smaller field and in a much lees spectacular way. But as .the nation responds to these ap peals, and they will follow one af ter another as long as the war lasts, ao will the cause he advanced or retarded. We may as well face the fact that each of us has a duty which must he performed and which Is of benefit to us Juat to the de gree that we respond willingly and thankfully for the glorious oppor tunity to help In the greatest cause that has come to human kind for many centuries. The young minds of the commun ity should be schooled In these facts, They should be made to feel that they are a part of a great whole, 'a nation that is passing through a great stniggle. They should be brought In touch with the moment ous events of the times by an actual participation In them. In no other ' way can they learn as well the W sons of citizenship upon which the strength of a. free people must be founded. The children of this city have nn opportunity tomorrow morning of doing a little In this great work. It Is not so much the matter of the money value of what they Rive as It Is the spirit, the personal touch with great works, which Is brought home to each mobile mind as he realizes that he is taking part in putting an efficient army into the battle-torn fields of France to help a glorious catiBe, Let every child In the schools of P" It Is Better to Use Pure Food - . - ' " i WE SELL THE BEST PURE OLIVE OIL PURE EXTRACTS PURE CIDER VINEGAR PURE SALAD OIL KINNEY & TRUAX GROCERY Ql'AUTY MRMT Grunt Ps bo given the pleasure and gratlfloation of taking part In this great work. Allen, deputy state fire iiiarHhul, reports that the flrn survey of Grants Pass will be completed this week, and that a riort of the conditions found, along with recom mendations, will be forwarded to Acting Mayor Demaray by State Fire Marshal Well In the near future 4'On account of the long dry sea son Grants Tans is having, I desire to say a word to the smokers," said Mr. Wells this morning. "The care lea smokers were the cause of over ft per cent of the fires In Oregon last year. No true analysis can be made of the fires originating from the var ious uses of tohaci-o, hut unquestion ably the cigarette Is the primary cause. Moat brands of modern cig arettes burn until fiilly consumed. differing from a cigar or pipe, which require ,a draft.. Cigarettes once lighted consume themselves by their own combustion, hence cant off butts become a live fire menace until en tirely extinguished. Tho above 'I one reason why every citizen should see that excelsior, hay, straw, rub bish and dry graiw should not be al lowed to accumulate around the premises. "Smokers ought to resolve to crush out the fire before they throw away the stub. All smokers are not cautions, but they should feel a sense of moral obligation and exer cise ordinary caution so long an the weather is dry. and should not throw a lighted cigar, cigarette or match where it wilt come In contact with dry grass or rubbish. "In behalf of the state fire mar shal's office. I desire to thank the business men of Grants Pass for the hearty co-operation received in our work of fire prevention, and for the great assistance rendored us by Flte Chief Cass and Chief of PoHce Mc Lane. A Fair Chance Every man owes himself a fair chance. He owes his business a fair chance. Because his business is the machinery through which he pays himself for his work. A fair chance means that he gives his business every known opportunity to flour ish. Business is like gardening. The gardener who picks out the shady corners for his sun-loving plants doesn't give them a fair chance to turn into food and flowers. The business which keeps its offerings in the dark doesn't give them a fair chance to turn into dollars. The man who expects the public to come to him without telling it what to come to him for isn't doing himself justice. ' A fair chance means, among other things, turning on the sunlight, the sun light of publicity.
