IS SPENT ON ROADS Salem, Sept. 5., December 1, 1916, to August 1, 1917, the state highway commission has actually ex pended for administrative expenses and surveys and road work the sum of (103,621.33, according to a fi nancial statement prepared for the commission by Highway Engineer Herbert Nunn. December 1 was the beginning of the fiscal year. Administrative expenses have amounted to $16, 144. HO, while an additional $8,314.52 has been spent on automobiles. The largest expenditure is shown In Columbia county, but of a totsl of $23,616.87, $20,978 Is for work done by S. rtenson In 1916 and 1917. In Yamhill county, In addition to the $9,829.21 spent by the commis sion, county funds In the sum of $2, 283.69 have been expended for grading and paving near Sheridan. t ' Word has been received by State ; Highway Engineer Nunn thut cost of Improvement of five miles of the Wolf creek hill road In Josephine I county cannot be paid from federal ' funds and thut such a road would i not be acceptable to the secretary ; of agriculture as a post road.
